Exhaust questions

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Newbie here, and I have read a lot of the exhaust posts, but I still don’t quite understand the different modifications. My understanding is removing the resonators, possibly x pipe and locking valve open will improve sound without CEL, but if you remove the CAT you get CEL? What is the best band for the buck without getting CEL or risking warranty?

You get the CEL when you remove the primary cats which are located on the downpipes. Not when you just remove the secondary cats on the midpipe.

So replacing midpipes gets rid of one CAT? Where are the resonators and what do you need to remove them?

Yes installing one of the aftermarket midpipes removes the resonators and the secondary cats. Significant sound increase and improvement. Any louder and it would be too much for my liking.

Thanks for the link. Looks like the PSI mid pipe might be the best option for better sound and no worry of CEL?

Dumb question, but can any shop install these once purchased? What is typical mid pipe install cost?

I have one for sale in the classified section (sold my car). It was fairly easy to install. The sound was great and I noticed an improvement in throttle response and torque.

1 - 1.5 hours for the install. PSI sounds great, but no CEL worry with any midpipe option. it's only when you replace the downpipes you'll need to worry about the CEL

here is an install video of the Active Midpipe, the PSI install is very similar
