F80 vs G80 comfort

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello everyone.

I had a F80 comp that I used as a true daily driver for a couple of years. Hauling kids, groceries, you name it. The car was fantastic but beat me up. I’m in my early 40s now. I drive about 12,000 miles a year.

I’m wondering now how comfortable a G80 base is compared to that vehicle…

I’m having trouble finding a non comp car to test drive, which is why I’m posting and would appreciate any feedback.

Although not as good as a testimonial from someone on here, maybe try searching YouTube for 2023 g80 m3 MT. I seem to remember finding a bunch of reviews of the non competition model.

I am in my mid-thirties and daily a base M3. Currently 12k with the carbon seats and couldn’t be happier.

I’m in my mid 40’s and it’s nicely damped and comfortable for daily. I put 10k a year and live in a pretty much urban area where roads are sometimes not the best. Still, it’s very smooth perfectly capable. Getting in and out is fine albeit not as easy as if we were in our 29’s.

Btw you’re not old! Old is when you’re losing your memory and you can’t go the bathroom on your own! 😂

First of all, stop it. Early 40’s is not old. You’re just out of your 30’s for goodness sake.

Anyways, I’m 53 with an M3 base in order and I found the ride quite compliant. I’m coming from a 991.2 Carrera T that was definitely a stiffer ride.

By the way, life moves FAST. I remember posting on forums 25+ years ago and it doesn’t seem like that long ago.

I went from a F80 comp to my G80 xDrive comp. Comfortability wise I feel they are the same. I think both have a sporty feel where you feel the bumps in the road. If a smoother experience is what you want then you'll need to go elsewhere (M5 or non M). I love the car but if the F80 beat you up, so will the G80. However the G80 has way nicer tech in the inside and even in the RWD base model, it can put the power down way better than the F80. I've seen lots of reviews where they were surpised they weren't in an awd, (excluding from a dig).

I appreciate the advice on Yt videos, I’ll check that out.

And yes I know I’m not “old”. But it seems like always reading these threads of “daily driving” or “carbon is comfortable” are from guys who are under 35.

I think I can be said to be "old" at 75. <g> I had an F80 and now have a G80 6-speed. I was not too fond of the F80 -- it seemed too large. The G80 feels smaller, even though I know it is larger and heavier. There was a year-plus gap between the cars, but I judge the ride to be more or less equal. For what it's worth...

Terrifying time when I see the thread title and decide to read JUST to see what “old guy” range was and was NOT expecting 40s. I am not ready to consider myself old once I cross over that line.

Though I did watch a vid that called the manual transmission a “millennial theft deterrent system” which made me stop and realize I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to drive the 6MT to anywhere with a valet!

I couldn’t put “old guy” in quotes in the thread title. Guess I should have wrote “middle age”…

I am in my mid to late 50’s and have owned many a BMW. My previous was an F80, the current being a G80 xDrive comp albeit with the normal seats. I think if I had gone with the carbon bucket seats my wife would have ripped me a new one.
I am not sure what you mean by “beat me up”, so hard to judge by comparisons. I had my F80 for 5 years as a daily driver putting over fifty thousand Kms on it. Now it may have tried to kill me a couple of times (old age capability), and the DCT wasn’t my fav at low speeds, but it was perfectly liveable.
Over the last 15 months of ownership, I have only done about eight thousand Kms in the G80, although I did a round trip of 2500 Kms and found the car to be more comfortable, enjoyable, etc. So for me, it was definitely the right decision to move to the G80.

I'm also early 40s and find the G8x to be plenty comfortable for a daily. I use my M4 manual for commuting to the office, shuffling the kids around when my wife and I have to divide and conquer to get everyone where they need to be, and I also use it for fun runs and spirited weekend drives. It's very comfortable.

As another person posted, life does move fast. I remember posting on forums 20+ years ago and you blink and here we are. I want to drive the fun cars now and worry about getting comfortable luxury barges when I'm actually old. 20 years from now I do think we could perhaps call ourselves "old" but not yet!

Carrera T was my fun car. Daily driver was a GTI. Gave my GTI to my son, who just moved to DC. So my fun car became my only car.

Choices were to use the Porsche as my daily, get a new daily, or sell the Porsche and get one car that is still fun, but is also more comfortable and practical.

Couldn’t justify buying another car given how much I’ve been driving lately, and while the Porsche is a phenomenal car, it wasn’t a practical “only” car for me.

That’s the story. Currently renting a car from Sixt until my M3 arrives. Ironically, I rented a Jetta or equivalent from them but they didn’t have any left - so they gave me a 2-Series convertible. 😁

Im later 40's and have had E92 X2, F10 M5, F82 M4, F80 M3, 911 X4 and am back in a G80 M3. The G80 M3 is the best daily driver Ive had yet for my age.

My 911's where the best drivers car. But the G80 M3 is a really nice daily driver.

Take care of yourself and you’re golden.

The guys I play in tennis are 20 years younger than me. I’m way more fit and in shape than they are. Fitness level; ZERO competition!!!

I take exception to that! I'll be 75 this June and have an G87 M2 manual on preorder. If I don't like that after seeing it in the flesh I'll go with a G82. Aside from physical issues, you're only as old as you let yourself be.

I'm 59 and owned my car for a year now and love driving it every chance I have. Owned a Seven series before and don't miss it. Love the change of pace and don't need the space or comfort anymore. I don't like driving long distances so I would fly or take a train.

I went from a f80 comp to a g80 comp xdrive. The G80 is way more comfortable and smoother over uneven roads and highway expansion joints. Even my wife commented that it is a lot more comfortable.

Wink

I have a problem getting comfortable in any car after driving pickup trucks. I am pretty broke up. Nearly died in 78 in a motorcycle accident and am currently dealing with Stage IV NHL. Good luck. 65.
