I'm in the big change camp. Doesn't have to mean the grills get smaller. Shape could change, slats could become vertical. Rake could become more dramatic. Honesty, the latter would make them look a lot better as is. If the top were just a bit further forward and they tapered backward toward the bottom, I think they'd look better as is.

Especially, if the sales for the current models with the large grilles are low.

I think the M4 should get a different front. It doesn’t work on that car like it does on the M3. It doesn’t work because the car doesn’t overall look wide enough or something . G80 flows better with the grill.

The current grille is styled large, but it’s not as large as it appears at a glance. The actual openings are somewhat typical size, shape, and placement.

I don’t mind the current grille at all. It grew on me a long time ago. But I don’t see any reason the G80 is stuck with it now, it’s just fascia styling.

You just compared a person who revolutionized the whole industry to efforts of a design team who took a massive dump overnight on a storied brand (M), and great engineers who developed an amazing product otherwise.

I have no problem with the g80 grille.. it's everything around it that's the problem.
The grille on it's own is kind of cool looking.. thing is you need a design that complements it and all they have are some weird shapes for the sake of weird shapes.

Well that's who Dukec and company thinks they are in this case.

When I saw the news on the front page, I was 100% sure it would be mostly about the grill again (and I guess like 80% of the posts are about it). I doubt the grill design will change too much, but that's just a feeling.

Personally, the grill doesn't bother me at all. I was honestly a bit irritated at the very beginning when I saw the first leaks. In the meantime, I quite like the design and some old BMW models look dated now for me.

However, I am very curious to see what will change. If we look at the LCIs of the past few years, there might be some changes in the front (headlights and/or bumper). I'm not a huge fan of the new headlights of the 5 Series and X3, but particularly the 5 Series (the headlights look like Volkswagen to me). I expect a change in the design of the 4 Series taillights, which obviously will only affect the M4. Regarding the interior, the changes will also probably mainly affect the M4, since it currently still has iD7.

It was "LCI I" and received the LCI from 3-serie sedan/touring elements. The G80/G81 will receive LCI II when the 4-series/M4 gets the LCI. This was similar for the F80 LCI and LCI II too.

BMW has never changed the exterior styling of the M3/4 with an LCI of any generation, so the grills will remain as-is (aside from that, the big grills are now used on many other models). The only thing they ever do is change the headlight and taillights ever so slightly anymore. The standard, non-M3 E46 LCI was pretty substantial in the front end, as was the LCI for the current G20. Those have been exceptions to the rule.

If they change the grill they almost have to change the hood... would be an extensive LCI. I don't think that will happen.

Fried egg 911? Are you in 2009?

Here is a sample of the bullet points a Youtuber desperate to be different will throw at you over next years:
  • The fried egg 911 has "same headlights as GT1, and is most unique 911 out there!"
  • "It is like any 911, just as good. Only headlights are not for some people, but I love it"
  • "yes interior is crap but you should be driving"
  • "yeah go for 1999 model year if you must, no issues with IMS"
  • "it now slips into the 25 year category so you can import all those wonderful models now into US"
  • "bottom of depreciating curve, baby"
  • "Porsche updated head unit has CarPlay (porsche people dont have androids"

That said, if LCI can donate its hopefully nicer face to the pre/LCI, then the pre/LCI will be sweet bargain.

I thought this was a funny post when I first saw it, now it’s devolved into more grill hate! Bottom line is this, if you don’t like the grill don’t but the car. Some of this is shortsighted and lacks the imagination necessary to fully understand what BMW has done with radical redesign on the grills for the G80 series. It is unique among all BMW model lines and makes it immediately recognizable and this, in twenty years makes it a classic automobile. Combine that with the superior driving abilities of the car with AWD, which makes it more practical and assessable to those of us who live in the northern climate and you have the highest sale numbers ever for an M car. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. BMW knew what they were doing, if you don’t believe me check the allocation thread. I would be shocked if the LCI included any changes to the grill, enough of us appreciate and like it to continue to buy the car.

Isn't this similar to the F8x generation? The M3 got a very small LCI for the interior and taillights then a second one a year later when the 4 series was updated with new headlights.
I can't imagine they will change anything in the interior since the new iDrive 8 was just implemented in the G80 and will be added to the G82 in a couple of months. I would assume it will be a headlight refresh and maybe a slight bumper redesign, but nothing drastic.
BMW seems fairly committed to the larger grills as seen in some of their other new cars that are coming out, so I don't think they will backtrack, but could slightly revise it to offer a newer look.
