Does anyone own a touch screen delete car?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I ordered my Z4 back in September, I received the call about the deletion of the touch screen. I'm beyond pissed, but I wonder how big of a loss it really is. Does anyone have a new 2022 car with the non functional touchscreen? Have you noticed any glitches, or issues?

I can understand being unhappy about not having the touchscreen but if it makes it any better, I have it in mine and I never use it. The controller, gestures, voice seem to do everything I need.

Not having touch is like going back to 2016 tech. No thanks....you can either refuse the car and rebuild or retrofit a touchscreen from a junkyard.

how can you retrofit a brand new 2022 car from a junkyard? also, wouldn't it void the warranty? thanks.

Find a wrecked g29 (i know tough due to low volume) or buy a new screen and some coding. The lack of touch functionality was temporary, so the chances of a dealer finding a retrofitted screen during service is almost zero unless you actually have a problem with the screen and try to have it repaired under warranty.

G05 and G07s are already doing it

Glad I am not buying now. I wouldn’t accept a car without a touch screen. I can’t imagine CarPlay being nice without one.

Consider it a blessing. Nothing nastier and distracting for a driver than a touch screen.

Agreed with this. If a dealer told me my car did not have a touchscreen, I would tell them that doesn’t work for me and would not take delivery of it.

We got three X5s without touch-screen. I believe they all completed production within a three-day period and everything built after that had the touch-screen. I can't imagine how the factory could fuck-up that badly. Either they didn't know, or they picked the wrong parts, or some such nonsense, but the dealers didn't know until the cars showed up.

We have one more non-touch-screen car coming in and it's a 4-series. I wouldn't have blamed any of our customers for turning the cars down . . . but they didn't. As the owner of a Year-Last-of-the-1 series, it wouldn't have bothered me but then I hate CarPlay.

I thought this was a supply chain and chip shortage that caused it?

I imagine it is less painful to leasing owners? I can see those buyers shrugging a lot of the deletes off as they'll be "swapping it out soon anyway".

Might also be due a lot to most buyers not being as deep in the weeds as we all are.

I'm surprised BMW is doing this. Audi is doing the same, but when the head units / touch screens / missing components are available, you simply take it back to the dealer and they install it. You are also getting hefty discounts.

Don’t know where you’re hearing that…there has been no indication from BMW they will be swapping parts after delivery.

He did say Audi though, to be fair.

Few are as "deep in the weeds" as I am after 50-years of BMW ownership but I certainly don't miss Touch-screen in my iDrive equipped 2013 128i M-sport 6-speed manual. Or, for that matter, any of my six BMW bikes.

I literally never use the touch feature. I do everything with the little wheel. Seems easier to me and I don't like finger prints on the screen. Everyone is different though..

The big problem for a long-term owner buying a car today without it is it will clip your long-term technical lifespan of the car iDrive system...

Take the 3G retirement issue that is cutting RTTI and other features off 2016 and older cars. The same will be true for these cars at some point in their lifespan. Pushing us to use CarPlay or Android Auto since those are available and integrate with the native experience (for some users these features are must have today). A lack of a touch screen is much less pleasant for these features as BMW doesn't control Apple or Google's in car UI.

I get it. Some users don't use these features or some are OK with using a cell phone mount for GPS as they skipped the HUD and etc. But for me, I wouldn't be happy.

If I leased though I could see it being a "well this is everywhere so I'll ride it out since I'm swapping the car in a couple of years anyway"... and "If it ends I'll just throw it up on Swapalease and get out from under it"...

I plan to sell my car after 7Y and over 100K miles on the clock so I'll have spent over $50K during my time of ownership (depreciation is a #*$%). I'd be pretty unhappy doing that without basic features from this era... Just me though.

I'm also younger < 40 so missing tech is a tough pill to swallow for me.

We need to get over this issue. Best I can tell it was a 3-day window in Spartanburg where BMW installed non-touch-screens and after that, it was over. We have one 4-series coming from Germany without one, also. But that's it. If you don't want one without touch-screen, don't take it. The real issue for me is how could BMW have been so asleep at the switch to let it happen in the first place??

I'd request some $$$ to be discounted simply because the car is coming with one less function that you expected. However, having had 2 F30's, 2 F80's, and 3 i3's with touchscreens in some of them, I honestly don't remember which ones did and which ones did not have a touch screen simply because I never used them. The iDrive knob is the best way to navigate the system without having to be distracted by trying to use a touch screen where you have to look down to see what button you are about to press. I wish all systems were this well designed to be used without having to touch the screen. Not only is it better, but it's safer and you don't end up with fingerprints all over the screen.

It's perfectly fine without the touch screen. My last 4 bimmers had carplay and I still use the wheel.

That's not true. There was a bulletin released on DCS a month prior stating all the details.
