I was in a similar situation. Dealer said <600 miles plus wouldn't be a problem.

Just got hit today with the:

“aside from the oil changes, we’re also going to plug into the computer and unlock the cars full power!”

I could not help but smirk and internally laugh. I didn’t even bother to say anything. I let him have his moment haha.

I bet this works on 9 out of 10 clients.

Clueless client: “Oh wow really?? Amazing can’t wait to see what it can really do! I knew something was off, it just needed unlocking!”

Haha anyways just wanted to share my day.

I love it when the dealer tells people the wrong thing. They're always just repeating things they've heard, and most of the time it's bs.

I noticed that the oil used on my M3 during the break-in service is not the same as some of the other part numbers I have seen posted on here. Would anyone be able to confirm if this oil is correct for M cars?

I went to a dealer that is not my typical "M certified center" so I am nervous that they screwed something up. Thanks in advance!

So uh...was the dude joyriding it? I don't know that techs normally take cars out for test drives after a service...

So, just scheduled my break-in service for this Friday, and a couple things:

1. AFAIK there IS a "break-in mode" from the factory. I see no reason they couldn't do this, as I even got a notice the other day on the infotainment screen that "full engine power limited, please refuel" (got down under about 30 miles DTE).

2. Oil change, diff change...what about transmission? Do they do anything else? Doesn't look like it judging by this thread but not sure if anything's changed in the last year.

Its the same 0-W30 that's listed for the B58. I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that the oil in the car is correct, but the code that the service writer entered into the computer, for "Break-in Service hasn't been updated. They type the shortcut code in for break in service, and it preloads, Oil Change, Diff and Filter kit. The 513552 WMB is likely the code to auto fill the Break in service.

Old comment, but these ticks are normal from direct injection engines. The high pressure fuel pumps are on the top of the engine near the firewall on the passenger side on the S58, being noisy pushing 5000+ PSI.

Not sure, but it depends how busy they are. I drop mine off at 1:30pm and got a call at 5:15pm that my car is ready for pick-up.

Did they give you a loaner?
I usually like to wait, but wouldn't mind a loaner.

They did not, but they offered me an UBER to and from the house.

This will probably be controversial since it seems to be the opposite of what everyone else has reported.

I have a 22 M3 Manual that I purchased about 3.5 Months ago. It had about 4700 miles on it when I bought it. In service was late January 2022. I didn't know about the run in sensitivity before I bought it and in hindsight may have passed on this one. Run in was completed in March with 21XX miles. I took it in this morning for the annual oil service at a shade over 6k miles. I asked the SA who verified with the Service Manager. No flags, no issues, no reason why if my diff grenades or my motor had an issue that it would not be covered under warranty. I am also eligible to purchase any additional service contracts or BMW warranties extending coverage. They also are replacing my drivers seat cover under warranty (I think the previous owner was probably a huskier fella as the bolster is pretty worn).

Just another use case.

is hypoid oil the same as differential fluid?

Got my break-in service, today. The BMW service dude confirmed that he was unlocking the super saiyan sport+ settings on my CPU. I drove it home giggling the entire way. I can confirm that the factory does, indeed, limit the power of the car from the factory. It was definitely pulling harder and smoother the entire way home!

My UK tech said no changes besides fluids. No power changes besides you can now redline it. Maybe USA thing or a good imagination 🙂

If you follow the break in protocol, it truly feels like a different car just because you’re now going beyond 4-4500rpm. It may feel like some special unlocking magic, but is not part of the procedure. It is awesome though!

I spoke to an M specialist at my dealership and he has confirmed with Germany, that at the break in service
"The CBS data clearing after the service is done enables the DME to release full power output of the vehicle."

People are getting full trap speed, and full 0-60, and full 60-130 numbers right off the lot. The "M specialist" is incorrect.

Picked up my car this morning. Just spent the afternoon putting on 100+ miles on it through twisty rural roads. Varied gear and RPM but kept it under 5k. Plenty of engine braking on this route.

Unfortunately, I start my 2,700 mile drive home this weekend and no BMW dealerships on my route have their service department open on this weekend for when I hit 1,200 😧. My dealership warned me that the car can't be CPO afterwards if I don't do the break-in service at 1,200. Anyone know if this is true? Any potential impact to warranty anyone has heard of?
