BIMMERPOST

I have been lucky enough to be invited by BMW M to join them during an amazing weekend in Catalunya circuit during the CER (Spanish Resistance Championship). The initial idea was to be able to see the new G87 there but they couldn't get one in time. They let us drive almost all the M lineup. Amazing experience. The star of the show was, in my opinion, the new M3 Touring. Some photos below (plus an M3 with full of M Performance parts fitted).

EDIT: Apologies for my finger in the first photo, it was a humid but sunny morning and the phone screen was barely visible.

Did you get to drive the G80 and G81 back-to-back? I'm curious whether there is any perceptible difference in how those two handle. Not that it makes a difference to me... as we are not allowed to have G81s this side of the pond.

The G81 was not available for driving, unfortunately, but one thing that amazed me is how different the M3/M4 G8X are to the X3M/X4M G0X. I was expecting the G8X to feel faster and nimbler but it felt to me like going from an X3 M40i to an M4. The engine even sounded different both inside and outside.

Another topic is the M Performance exhaust in the G8X: Putting the looks aside (who the hell approved that design??), the sound diference was only noticeable to me from the outside. Stock one was a little bit more muted and (probably) a little bit higher pitched also. I'm pretty sure that blindfolded only very fee people could differenciate them. Please take into account that I am talking about EU models, so it might be different in OPF-free countries.

IOMG make any Gxx model literally shine, in fact shine good enough to win a prize at the nearby auto show. Amazing color.

The wagon forgives all of the design missteps with the G80 language. I don't know how, but there it is. Perfection.

The M3 wagon looks so good. Suits the G-series stying much better than the sedan imo.

M3 touring looks so good.

However, those M performance parts are horrid.

The G81 M3 Touring looks superb in this color & the sexy proportions "almost" make me forget about the gigantic / controversial front grille. That M-performance exhaust has always looked a touch out of place & hideous in some ways though.

G81 M3 Touring in IOM green...
M Performance exhaust...

I'd be first in line for the M3 wagon. Sad thing is that line will never have start line in the US.

Interesting your point about the differences between the M3/M4 and the X3M/X4M: I also had the opportunity to drive the X4M back-to-back with the M3 and M4 at the Perf. Center in SC and my impression was very similar to yours. I did not like the X4M much and it did not feel in the same league as the M3C/M4C on track.

Thank you for sharing! That M3 Touring is a thing of beauty, particularly in IOMG. I was in SC for M School last week and they put me in an IOMG M3 Comp and man, was that a sweet ride. If only they brought the Touring to the States…
