BMW Press Release:

BMW of North America announced today that three of its models – the BMW 2 Series; the BMW 4 Series; the BMW 5 Series – were the top ranked vehicles in their categories according to the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS). Also, BMW ranked 6th among all the brands, considerably above the industry average.

“IQS is the leading indicator of customer delight in the initial phase of ownership as it measures not only how well our vehicles perform but also how well our dealers are doing in demonstrating the functions of the new vehicle,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “The model rankings show improvements across the board from existing to new models with the clear challenge being to improve and simplify technology.”

In the 2015 J.D. Power IQS Study, the BMW 2 Series was the Highest Ranked Small Premium Car; the BMW 4 Series was the Highest Ranked Compact Premium Car; and the BMW 5 Series was the Highest Ranked Midsize Premium Car. Additionally, the BMW 7 Series was ranked 2nd in the Large Premium Car segment.

The BMW brand ranked 6th among the nameplates with 99 PP100, a 9 point improvement from 2014. PP100 is the J.D. Power standard measurement of problems per 100 vehicles. The 2015 industry average is 112 PP100.

The 2015 J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 84,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2015 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study was fielded between February and May 2015.

The full J.D. Power information about the 2015 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) can be found at: www.jdpower.com/quality

Sorry but this ranking doesn't mean #%$#. Especially based on their definition, "-The*J.D. Power Initial Quality*StudySM*(IQS) serves as the industry benchmark for new-vehicle*quality*measured at 90 days of ownership and has proven to be an excellent predictor of longterm reliability, which may significantly impact new-vehicle purchase decisions." Give me statistics of what happened when the cars were out of warranty.
Sure, Porsche is number 1- Let's do a survey and see how many miles were on those Porsche?

No surprise at the top spot. Their cars are simply built to higher standard than anything on and not on the list.

So why would the 4 series be separate from the 3 series? I understand they are different "series" but same car. Especially considering it's just BMW semantics. I wonder how the ranking would've changed if they included the 3/4 series together.

You may change your mind after reading this. Lexus is always and most likely will always be number 1 when it comes to dependability studies.

It is a completely different car and, as such, is scored independently of the 3. I wonder if the 4 scores better because they produce less of them?

Granted I'm one of the ones who prefer their cars built in Germany, but I find it funny with the complaints people on here have shouted, the SA plant has less initial defects/malfunctions than the dingolfing plant.

Congrats to them, clearly management and workers have got it together there.

But yeah these rankings aren't all that relevant because the time period is so short. Mechanical reliability wise I'll take Toyota over Porsche any day.

Like the rankings. Really love my new 4 series to no end. Almost worth every penny I'm paying for her!

No, but you really do get what you pay for. The car is great to drive, looks sexy, and somehow feels both sporty when needed and luxurious when wanted.

One should not spend more than 5 seconds wasting their time looking at JD power surveys.

Got a transmission failure? That's 1 problem.

Dislike the squeaky wipers? That's another 1 problem.
