G80 M3 50 Jahre in Interlagos Blue vs. M5 Competition in Marina Bay Blue

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So do I buy a 2023 M3 50 Jahre in Interlagos Blue with carbon buckets for $112K or a 2022 M5 Competition in Marina Bay Blue for $118K?

Interlagos is one of the best colors I’ve seen on the G80.
Marina Bay Blue is one of the best BMW blues of all time.
The carbon bucket seats will be better for my track day activities but the M5 seats feel more like the right size for me.
I don’t love iDrive 8, but I have a 2019 X5 so the M5 is almost too similar to justify the cost.

Specs for quick reference:

2022 BMW M5 Competition: 617 HP, 553 lb-ft from a 4.4L twin-turbo V8. 8-speed auto. AWD. 4237 lbs (per C&D). 0-60 in 2.8 seconds (per C&D). 1.0 g of skidpad grip (per C&D). 17 MPG combined. 196" L x 75" W x 58" H. 7:35 around the Nurburgring, 2:54 around VIR.
2023 BMW M3 Competition xDrive: 503 HP, 479 lb-ft from a 3.0L turbo I6. 8-speed auto. AWD. 3917 lbs (per C&D). 0-60 in 2.8 seconds (per C&D). 1.03 g of skidpad grip (per C&D). 18 MPG combined. 189″ L x 74″ W x 57″ H. 7:28.6 around the Nurburgring, 2:53.5 around VIR.

I personally didn't even consider the M5. The 5 series platform has grown so much that is like an old 7 series. The size makes the M3 the enthusiasts choice. Furthermore the straight line performance is probably a wash. Go with the M3

Tough choice... 112 is a heck of a lot for an M3. M3 is a track monster, but the M5 is a straight-line rocket.

Do you want the long-range, heavy bomber, or the multi-role fighter?

If you're looking to track a lot, get the M3.

Damn, Interlagos looks so good.

I do probably 6 track days a year with my 2019 GT350. This car would replace that and our 2019 X5 50i.

Looking at the spec sheets again it’s a bummer that the M3Cx doesn’t have adaptive cruise control. We love that on our X5.

If replacing X5 as well, I'd do the M5 for the minimal price difference.

If tracking is in the plans I’d go with the 50j. M5 is a lot of car to get around the track for a few sessions

I had an F90 M5 C, and went to G82 M4 C. The M5 quickly got boring to drive, the G82 is so much more fun to drive.

Current F90 cp owner switching to G80cp x....after 3yrs...

The M5 has the better powertrain and if spec'd comes with a better interior with options you can't get on the G80.

Dynamically they are a generation apart unless your talking CS, but the M5 is a beast on the track for what it is but it's not set up like the newer G80.

Yeah it weighs 200-300 lbs more than a fully loaded G80 but it will walk away from the g80 in a straight line everyday/ everytime and eat some exotics too.

Only downside is the F90 retires next year an if anything you will want to upgrade to the G90 in 2yrs when it's out.

If they could fit the v8 in the m3 give it B&W, a few more buttons and a 20 gallon tank..they would have something but I think the G90 will address that.

A part of me wants to say get the V8( dying bred) but without going ham the M5 is a cruiser first but m3 is better in the curves.

Toss up... Could always just build a G80 and skip the 50th as there are no performance enhancements... Or wait for the CS

I drove the M3, M4 and M5 on track, all in a single day. The M5 feels heavy and its throttle response is much worse than the other two. The minimal straight line performance difference isn't worth getting an M5 over the other two. If the m3 is xdrive, go for it.

M5 ALL DAY.

Even if you are tracking the car, still the M5. No offense but i highly doubt you have the skillset to bring out the best a G80 would have to offer it being a "better track car" over the M5.

The M5 has better road presence, faster, sound better and that blue you posted, IS better.

M5.

I have had two F90 M5s and currently moving to G80 jahre. Unless it's an M5 CS, I would go G80x. New tech much better drivers car. The steering feel is so much better and the car rotates so much better on the track. I've driven both on the track. Plus with the right mods the G80 will look menacing.

I wouldn’t get a M3 over 100k unless it was a G80cs. At 85-90k vs 120-125k, I would get the newer platform G80. But at only a 6k price delta I would get a F90 no question. At the very least with a 110k+ G80 spec I would expect CCBs.

MSRP on that M3 50 Jahre should be $101k and change. Looks like the dealer is charging $10k over and the OP is assuming that the M5 would be sold at MSRP.

I'd def go with the M5C, but I am biased. It looks decently spec'd. It doesn't have CCBs which are nice and I am guessing no B&W audio but seems like a nice spec otherwise. Also, the same exact car if it was MY23 would be $4200 more with the price increase.

Going to be tough to talk that down, they know what they have. Market has calmed down a bit, but it's not a 'regular' G80.

That’s correct, those are the initial prices they quoted me. Based on what I see brokers offering on here those prices seem reasonable. Of course I would still try to negotiate off a couple grand but who knows…

I like the M3 50 Jahre more but I am bummed it doesn’t have Driver Assist Pro system. That really hurts its ability to replace my X5 50i…
