G8x Rear Brake Pad DIY

Hello everyone, I made a little DIY video while doing my rear brake pads yesterday. If you don't have access to put your car in service mode, you may need to remove the electronic parking brake motor from the rear caliper and retract the actuator from the caliper. The process is not very hard.

Hope this video is of some help. Thanks!

The quality may be 480p for now until it is fully processed, then it should be 1080p

Really wish people would just buy a cable and software to put the rear brakes in service mode to do this properly, instead of the bs process of taking the EPB servo motors off. That’s not how this should be done. You’re spending more money on your brake pads than it would cost for the right tools… especially if you plan on doing your own service work on your car. It pays for itself. DO IT RIGHT.

Haha. For real. It’s also about easier to do it with the phone app and unwind the electronic parking break then messing with it.

Can you recommend a tool to put the brakes in service mode?

Bimmerlink + any of their recommended OBD2 connectors. I've had the Veepeak for years and it's been great. Connect the app, put the car in service mode, enable brake service. You'll hear them wind back for 2 seconds. Swap you pads, then take them out of service mode. They'll wind back up. Easy peasy.

Wow…that’s not even expensive. Just a few years ago I don’t recall this being available. I had to buy a dedicated OBDII scanner to do resets and stuff. This Bimmerlink + Bluetooth OBDII seems to be like a much simpler (and more universal) approach.

Not expensive at all, and is probably the way I'd go today if I was starting from zero. But compared to the brake pads, even the OBDII scanners aren't expensive. Foxwell NT530 with the BMW module is $170 and will do this and other service stuff. I originally bought mine with the VWAG module for our Q7, and then added the BMW one for $80.

Nah, it's great. Plus you can use it across multiple cars. I coded ASD off of my friends G87. And it works with Bimmercode. Only drawback there is that you have to buy each program separately. Still, you're looking at around $120 for both programs and a scanner.
