Post Tips for Delivery

Hi All,

Does anyone have advice or tips on what to look out for when you take delivery of your new M3 at the dealership?

I took delivery of a Tesla once, only to shortly realize that there were about 25 issues with fitment, gaps, paint issues, etc.

Thanks!

Interested on this one too. Obviously I plan to go over the car with a fine tooth comb, but hearing other’s experience would help.

Just look around and check. You won't notice any minute details until you give it a few drives but your dealer should be pretty good at addressing issues.

Paint issues/shipping damage is the most common issue people have on delivery, but even then it's not all that common.

I recall seeing a thread about this--I'll see if I can find it, but there was something about checking the suspension for packaging material?

Check for plastic shipping blocks in springs.

What is everyone's consensus on Tracwrap or similar things to drive home 5 hours?

I suppose if you are planning on PPF and/or ceramic coat, you may wish to Tracwrap.

Skipping the $6k ppf, but maybe do bumper and hood. Paint correction & ceramic coat for sure.

It sounds like it would make sense for you to protect the areas to be PPF'd. So 5 hour drive, huh--where are you picking up your car?

I've got about a 4 hour drive and plan to trac wrap. I've heard it can leave a nasty residue on the car that needs to be polished off though

Doesn't seem like it always happens, not supposed to. If you look up the YouTube guy The Daily Driven, he puts it on his M3 after doing PCD, and then peels it off no problem.

I took delivery of my 911 in the rain. Didn’t even look it over. Hoped in the seat and drove it home. Your M3 is a car, not a museum piece. Look it over, then drive it and enjoy it. The whole perfection of assets is getting into the OCD realm and it’s spreading. Maybe because cars have been temporarily appreciating?

No, it’s because of Tesla’s legendary (and badly overblown in many cases) poor build quality. Became a “thing” to arrive with a checklist because Tesla was notorious for ignoring or denying obvious quality flaws. And at one point in time, you could reject delivery of the car within 24 hours and 50 miles, or something like that.

Before that, no one even had the phrase “panel gaps” in their lexicon.

Agreed 100% except the OCD part of my brain always wins against the rational part of my brain 😫

I copied this from a thread I read a couple months back but can not find the thread. It was important enough to me to put it in a my Word document thought.
Special order pick up tips
1. Tire Pressure. After one dealer over inflated my tires, I’ll never not check the pressures again. I always check them.
2. Strut blocks, make sure they are removed. I’ve read lots of threads that mentioned some service departments, or the port, fail to remove them.
3. Check to make sure no scratches in the paint or rims, and no bubbles in tires.
4. Check to make sure all lights are working, interior and exterior.
5. Check to make sure both main and any alternate keys (cards/valet/etc.) work as expected.
6. Check the fluid levels (brakes, windshield washer, power steering, etc.).
7. Track wrap if driving a distance, and your OCD would cause you mental anguish the whole way home.
8. Take a test drive of the vehicle you are picking up, before signing the papers, in case you notice something is off putting or not working correctly.
Update:
9. Check to make sure the rear brake caliper M clips are present. If not, have the dealer order them for you, as they should be included.

Check to make sure your VIN matches the documentation. You'd be surprised.

Paint meter. If it checks out I'm usually satisfied.

Slow down, don't feel rushed and enjoy the process! It can be a stressful but exciting day.
