Poor sales figures will be blamed on COVID, not the controversial grill

BIMMERPOST

Calling it now, poor sales figures will be blamed on COVID-19 and not highly controversial front grill.

I haven't crossed this 6th Gen M4 off my list and still interested in viewing in person, but most likely will be switching brands.

Is the new design growing on you?

Yes, for sure. Not many good choices for a sedan at this price point, with that level of performance. I guess I tend to like new and different sometimes... let's face it, these will be quite a change from anything else in the BMW lineup. I think most will see it and say "what the heck is that?" I do like the aggressive look and while I'm still a bit uncertain about the grill, I'm getting there with it. It is what it is. It's not my DD, which is far more conservative... so I want this to be more !

My dealer has a line of orders not sure where you are doing your channel checks. Plus didn't BMW just get fined $18m for inflating sales figures anyways?

BMW will outsell its competition in the big 3, but the only auto mfg that had any decent deliveries this year was Tesla so you are comping off -30% YoY growth for 2020 anyways and these orders will reflect mainly 2021 orders.

I bet luxury car sales will be down double digits still, but the M3/M4 on a relative basis will do well, though that may still be down YoY.

While that's a possibility, my bet is they've adjusted the projection and will still meet their target. And that fact really has not much to do with the good/bad design or specs of the car.

I think we all realize that we live in a age where having good substance and design of a product is no longer indication on whether the product will sell to great numbers.
This can be seen in a lot other categories not just cars.

I agree, these cars will sell well. Lose a few buyers, gain a few buyers. The pandemic and world economy after the American election could come into play, but so could a meteorite.

A general BMW sales slump should be blamed on COVID. Additional M3/M4 sales slump or sales success should be attributed to the car itself.

Don’t worry there will be ways to prove you right or wrong whether you are a hater or fan

The key is to compare ratio of M sales and regular models to historic ratios. We can expect an overall decline in auto sales in general due to the current climate, but only if we see a disproportionate decrease in M3/M4 sales can we begin to suggest that maybe the controversial design had something to do with it.

I can only speak for Europe, but the feedback I got from dealers around the EU is great. The G8X seems to generate more interest at launch than the F8X. Assuming a similar conversion into sales, the numbers look promising.

Going with that design was a bold move, but it seems to pay out for BMW. (The normal 4 seems to be a flop tho...)

I honestly thought the G80 would grow on me as more videos were out but it hasn't happened yet. The fartcan exhaust clip that came out didn't help the questionable front end.

Im waiting to see what the new Caddys bring before making any decisions.

Not to the point that I'd spend £80k on one, it's moved from OMG to it looks OK in black, then they release stuff like that MP version in black and red and I think no it's not a car for me. (might be for others though)

My dealer (high volume NYC area dealer) has close to 20 G80 and G82 orders in the order bank waiting for allocations.

It will sell fine, don't worry.

And even if it doesn't, then hopefully that means more incentives and easier allocations for the rest of us!

We are already seeing a lot of interest in the car, also have to remember the forum is a small fraction of the population. I do see this model just like all the previous ones starting off hot, leveling out, then slow near the end. I think the big thing will be which optioned car will not do as well. I can see a lot of differences in taste when it comes to a variety of options that are available. easy for custom orders but for lot orders could be tough finding the right combo that would appeal to buyers.

Do you think BMW is going to allow Frozen Orange to be produced in early allocations? If so, how substantially do you anticipate it will delay shipping?

I don't know, I dont think we have received much on indiv color info yet. Should be getting info on that soon though as it seems more and more info and reveals is coming out everyday. Frozen fire orange would be pretty epic though, dont think Ive seen that yet. if its a indiv option you can usually expect 3-9 weeks longer on top of the 6-8 weeks normal lead time

Do you know when people will be getting production numbers for the first allocations? It's an individual option but it's not a "true individual option" like Verde Mantis or Miami Blue. It's an option they are offering for this model specifically, so I wasn't sure if that would also delay the production. It's on the thread with all the individual options for exterior and interior.

ahh, ok. I wasn't sure, I let Jimmy Miller and our other guys stay on top of all that stuff. Let me ask Miller about the production number info.

Its NYC, the adidas sweatpants wearing lease brokers from brooklyn will sell these things no matter how unsightly this car looks.

I'm referring to the largest dealership in the tri state area. Not lease brokers operating out of a barber shop (or worse).

We have to understand the negativity of the grill is mostly coming from the enthusiast buyers. That is a very small sliver of the overall market. Most non-hardcover enthusiasts I have spoken to love this. This will be a massive seller. Even better is the fact of more choices to customize based on your specific needs. A lot more interesting colors interior and exterior. And probably more to come after this first MY.

I loved this design since the beginning and even though I just bought a M2C. I can't wait to add this to the garage as a family cruiser

COVID is the official excuse for any industry that isn't doing well this year.

Like no, of course it isn't the drastic change in design and perceived reduction in build quality across the lineup with fierce competition. It's COVID.
