For anyone wondering why the G8X looks awful in most pictures
Im seeing a lot of "this thing looks awful in pictures but its not too bad/amazing in person!"
or "this thing is growing on me!" after the deluge of video reviews. There's a simple explanation. Most camera phones have wider angle lenses. Focal lengths between 24mm and 35mm. Some even lower. Which can cause feature distortion in the center. When the car looks noticeably better (in some pictures and most videos) that means the picture/video taker is probably using a focal length closer to the human eye which is about 85mm (equivalent or full frame). Most of the semipro/pro cartubers are shooting on 50mm (85mm equivalent) and 85mm telephoto lenses (on full frame). You can see the effect here https://photoh.com.au/images/lindsay_adler2.jpg 99% of people don't know that hitting the x2 button on the iphone will get them the telephoto lens and closer to that 85mm and remove the type of distortion you see above. Of course some people are still going to hate the look of the car regardless of focal length. But just thought Id share. |

It kills me that every photos and video out there seems to focus on close ups. Back up for those pics!! I dgaf about close ups on the emblems, grille, brakes... show the whole car from a proper perspective. Case in point above.

This is really interesting. I know almost nothing about photography so I appreciate this information.

Yes many photos are distorted but in my opinion even the good photos just don't capture the G8x design well.
I feel when you're looking at pics you tend to focus on 1 thing at a time and from 1 viewing angle, but when you see the car in person you're either walking around it as you look, or the car is in motion. This allows a better 3D understanding of the car and how the design comes together. The best example is the hood design which works perfectly with the grill when you see it in person, yet people are asking for the F8x hood bump. Another example is when I look at pics I tend to focus on the hood line, but I saw 3 different G8x in person and I can't remember even noticing the hood line!

This car probably has the hardest front end to capture on camera ever. All the photos has painted a picture of a truly massive grille into my mind, and hence the grilles felt half as big IRL compared to all the photos.

Height of photos has also been interesting to see. People seem to love to crouch down and capture the grill head on when that is almost never how you'll view it in life. The photos above also show this. Too many low shots.

It has good angles. Just not all of them are good. Nothing to do with cameras or lenses, it's the car itself. Not sure why people want to make excuses for it. It is what it is at this point.

rear wheel arches photography:
all the photos were taken closer to the car which don't show how wide the rear fenders on both G80/82.

You're entitled to your opinion, but you are the minority. This car is so aggressive and I personally love everything about it.
Then again, I'm not a particularly subtle guy and this kind of styling suits me.

Have you seen the car? I'm asking for a specific reason.

The percentage has varied only +/- 3% since there were 20 votes. It is a large enough sample size to make my above statement quantifiable. The forum members are a much harder sell (very drastic design change and we all have a nostalgic attachment to our previous gen cars). If 72% of the forum members like the car, the % of the general car-buying public will absolutely be higher.

So you voted "No, I don't like it" WITHOUT answering my question as to whether you have seen the car in person haha. Nice.
