My regrets and lessons learned so far...
Hey Folks,
So I took delivery on 11/6/2023 of my 2024 M4 Comp. I'm approaching roughly $13k in the hole with this car so far. As of today there is 3900 miles on the car. - December 2023 - The front end of the car was entirely repainted due to extensive paint damage to the hood and rock chips all over the front end. This cost roughly $5000. - December 2023 - Post paint repair. I had front PPF done on the car. $2500 Total December Bill was roughly $8500 after taxes. - March 2024, $1800 for a cracked windshield. - March 2024 - This week I found several paint chips above the side skirt. I assume this will cost between $500-$1500 to fix with $2500 to PPF the rest of the car. I think I really screwed up by not going through insurance for any of this. I really was worried about affecting the carfax / vehicle history report. I should of immediately PPF'ed the whole car from the beginning.

Why would your insurance cover rock chips? Why are you painting a year old car because of rock chips anyway?
You ok OP? What is happening here? |

It’s 4 months old….Also comprehensive coverage is what covers rock chips / non-accident related damage.

Where do you drive that you have that many rock chips in a month. Something’s not right or you’re not giving all the details.

In one month of use you had to repaint your entire front end due to rock chips??? WTF? Do you exclusively drive on gravel roads (real question)? This makes zero sense at all.

Wow! Never understood why people don’t use the insurance they pay a lot of money for. Even if your rates go up 20% how long before the added cost adds up to 6k plus? Worried about a car fax? A ton of cars have accidents on their record. Would it reduce the value? Depends what the damage was. Minor front end work would show as “minor damage, front end”. No big deal. I can’t imagine spending this kind of money when I pay insurance. To each his own I guess.

PPF the entire car OP and don't worry about rock chips anymore. Even with PPF some damage may occur but remember these vehicles aren't investments. Don't worry about resale value. Drive and enjoy the car! No matter what we do it'll be impossible to avoid normal wear and tear from driving outside.

Dump trucks suck. There was one in front of me a few years back with the big sign on the back that said "do not follow within 200 feet, not responsible for damage." So I switched a couple lanes over and went around him. Well, a few minutes later he came up the lane next to me, merged back in front of me too close for comfort, hit a bump and dropped gravel all over the road. I'm sure I ended up with a few rock chips from that BS.
But yeah, any time I see a vehicle which could have rocks dropping out of it I make sure to double my following distance. |

Definitely something more going on with rock chips, I had my BSM unprotected for almost a year before I wrapped it and it had 0 rock chips. About 2500 miles of driving
I wrapped it and I have 2 vynil tears from rocks on the front bumper and hood (2 total) So i'm guessing those would have been rock chips if I didnt have a wrap, but clear coat should be stronger than vynil wrap. This is not to say I wrapped my car for paint protection but it has its benefits of added layer of protection. Full body PPF imo for our cars is overdoing things, I don't see why people need to spend $4-5k to protect the paint on their BMW. who cares about some rock chips.

Just wait until you get rock chips that puncture the PPF and leave permanent marks/cuts in the film. I PPFed my ENTIRE car and eventually something will cut through it. I did not replace a single piece of PPF lol.
If you want to protect the windshield there is something called ClearPlex. BUT prepare to replace it like every 18 months since it doesn't last long and its like 700 in my area so I don't usually recommend it. You just need to let it be lol. Do not worship your things or put your car on a pedestal lol. It's car, it's meant to be used and every chip/scratch is just another battle scar.

Jeez man, were you following construction trucks on the freeway for the first four months of ownership? Years ago I leased an Infiniti for three years. When I turned it in, there were chips sure, but nothing crazy. And that was in Oregon where they lay gravel when it snows, not salt.
Also, $5k for a repaint? I had a dent in my bumper from somebody backing into me a few months ago. Filling that and respraying the whole bumper was a $2700 insurance claim. I get where you're coming from, I was distraught when I got my first chip, but it's not a Ferrari 250 GTO. If you DD it, it'll get chips, scratches and nicks.

I drive 100 miles a day for work on Interstate 95. I understand rock chips were bound to happen but I’ve never had it this bad on any vehicle before.

Damn, sorry you had to go through all this. I remember I took delivery the same week as you. I'm at 3600 miles using it as my daily driver. I have frozen paint and decided to PPF the front so I have no rock chips that I can see.
I also checked 'avoid highway' on Apple Maps so I never take highways when commuting. It adds a few minutes to my commute but gives me peace of mind that I won't get sprayed with all these stones in Florida. |
