For sure down the road. There are plenty of high HP GTR's lurking these days. The more cars with big power, the better. I don't care what brand it is. Someone will get these things to a 1000 soon. Just need the right software. Many have said the engine and tranny are good till 1000 HP. What about Torque? That's the killer. This could be a true statement. Is it good for a few launches and a bunch of roll racing? Only time will tell. If you have to b build stuff up, get your pocket book ready!! Shit aint cheap. Axles will also be beat on. I did them On my G just to be safe. In the grand scheme, it was a cheap add on. Get your R888's on order when you tune these boys!!

Math says that’s a 50% increase

it uses Draggy which is a separate physical device with sensors and GPS akin to a VBOX. The results are accurate based on what I've seen compared to other VBOX's
True, but a lot of guys underestimate the impact of a slight incline/decline that isn't perceptible.

RWD feels different from AWD at and approaching the limit. Every review I have seen so far praises the new rwd's handling feel and traction....often saying it may be the best M3 ever in that regard. That feel is one reason I am considering purchase and I am not sure if the xdrive will change things or how much.

I have 3 driving schools and many track days, with multiple generations of M3s, under my belt and I have daily driven M3's for 13 years in the northeast U.S. AWD is a nice feature for weather and traction but I am concerned about the feel. If you have ever learned to have a rwd performance car at or very near the limit on track, you might have joined the club that loves to balance a rwd car's chassis through turns. When you get it right, it's a delight. I'm guessing this may be foreign to you, thus you made the Prius comment.

Importantly, I have never tracked nor pushed a BMW xdrive before. It sounds like it is heavily rwd biased in xdrive sport+ mode, so that alleviates some of my concern. If you want to go to rwd mode, you need to turn off stability control, which is a concern in some scenarios and for some people. However, the10 stage traction control being available with stability off works for track time for sure. Additional weight isn't too bad at 100 pounds. But you realize people spend many thousands of dollars trying to shave half that amount off their sports car, don't you?

So I am cautiously optimistic that the xdrive package will be great and living in the NE, it could be a fit for me. But it's not because of a 0-60 time. If that's the appeal, go electric. Save up and get a Plaid that will utterly destroy any M3 in a straight line. Or any other BMW for that matter.
Your post makes complete sense, to me. Maybe just philosophically, to me, anyway, its the best of both worlds, and having 2 M Modes, makes this possible. You can literally launch in AWD, hit the shortcut button on the fly, and by the first turn be in RWD. You could use the AWD to your advantage, in the sketchy parts of the track that you may run the chance of sliding across the track.

I also understand the dynamics of a decent RWD track car, having owned a C7, that car was excellent in putting the power down. From a roll, it would mostly hook, even at full throttle. Now, trying to launch it, it was finicky, and would blow the tires off, in a second.

I also don't think that this car would make a very good track car, at 3,900 pounds. It sounds like sacrilege, since were talking about an actual platform that was born on the track. If you're saving weight, spec the Carbon Ceramics, and the carbon seats, that's your 100 pound weight reduction, right there. Lastly, I wasn't pointing to anyone, specifically, when I commented about the weather. But the last thing Im going to be doing, in an M4 xDrive, is taking it to the snow and I live an hour and a half from Lake Tahoe. I'm probably not even going to be driving it in the rain, ever.

Wow BMW is now where Nissan was 13 years ago with the GTR (4000 lb, turbo 6 with AWD). And to add insult to injury Nissan GTR was still quicker (2.5 sec)

I still think its negligible at the power output of this car. Spec the carbon seats and brakes, and thats 100 pounds. And if youre going to tune it, its a no brainer. 900hp, and its almost a requirement.

There are many, many NA sixes that came before the F80 and were "faster" yet you still bought one.

I'm also sure BMW could've down the same sooner had they chosen to. There was also a time when the GTR wasn't $130K but those days are behind us now

Agreed but different class of car. People who want an M4 want an M4, or are deciding between it and a C63. Not many people cross shop a new car with an older one.

I'm sure the M4 is plenty fun to drive in its own right. Porsche 911s hold their value but at the end of the day all cars become old and upkeep/maintenance is annoying and expensive. Plus the Bimmer can likely fit a couple people in the back.
