Conflicting information - are allocations by M3 type?

Hello,

When a dealer receives an allocation, is it to build any M3 they want or is it by type? I.e. you got one allocation for an manual M3 and one for an M3 comp?

I have heard conflicting information from multiple dealers on this. One told me an allocation can be turned into anything, and one said they are by type. The one by type said I would be 9 or 10th on their general waitlist, and when I said this is too long then said I was actually number 2 on the "manual M3" waitlist.

They are technically by type, but the dealer has the ability to “flex” the allocation to any other type as needed.

My X3MC order from last year was supposedly converted from an M3 Comp allocation (according to the dealer), not sure how true that was, or even why they'd convert an M3 Comp allocation in the first place.

Yes, they can flex within the G80 platform. However, they cannot if it's a G82 and G83. Both are M4 cars, but allocated separately.

thanks all!

so it really doesn't make sense for them to maintain separate waitlists. unless they never flex the allocations?

I'm going to say for the most part it's just one big list -- this is how my allocation was set. However, I have called a few dealerships and they had separate lists for M3 and M4.

This is a great question, OP. I liked reading the answers.

From my experience and from what I have been told by a CA, the M3 allocations are changeable - from 6MT to CX. Interestingly enough though, I dealt with a dealer who had separate WLs from all three options. Why? I never got a straight answer. I think it was to help prioritize clients who were spending more, but that’s merely speculation.

This is highly doubtful.

The answer is….it depends.

I’ve seen an internal memo dated May of this year identifying which models could be flexed to other models for the month of July. It indicated that all G80 models were interchangeable.

This tells me, if they have to issue a memo stating such for a specific month, that it is likely not always possible.

Agreed, but they did use that excuse/reason/information to let me know when I cancelled the order when they were mad about it lol.

One dealer I went to also had separate lists.
The dealer I used just had one list. I dunno what that depends on but I am just saying some dealers do say that they have separate lists.

My dealer, when asking for my confirmation and an approval for my final build sheet, had said, and this was his almost exact wording, “very difficult to change RWD to AWD later, so better to do it now if you want AWD”

I originally ordered my M3 as comp rwd at the start of June, I asked my CA to change to Xdrive and he did it with no issues. It had already been scheduled for production as RWD and went into production begins 5 days later as xdrive

A G80 allocation is across ALL power trains -6MT, RWD Comp and XDRIVE Comp. They r built in the same factory in Munich unlike the G82 which is is built at a different factory in Dingolfing which has its own separate allocation.

Most dealers seem to keep a separate list of 6MT, RWD and Xdrive to make it easier to track who is ordering what but the allocation goes according to the date the order went in. So in the end, its all the same. Some CA and not familiar with this and become confused when u wanna switch ur powertrain and threaten to put u towards the end of the waitlist when u move between powertrains.

Based on what I’ve previously read on the sticky threads, m3 allocation can be 6mt, comp, or xDrive. Convertible is different allocation. M4 is the same. SA also confirmed this.
