Not nearly to the same scale, but my boss is a bit of an audiophile, so when I told him I had pre-ordered an insanely-expensive (IMO) limited-edition headphone amp, he was super geeked about it, and still asks me on occasion how great it sounds. He gave me shit the other day because I had been back from vacation for a few days and hadn't found time to use it yet.

He's an all-around great dude, and that's what a boss SHOULD be (and how I try to be). Somebody who celebrates when you succeed, and helps you figure out how to do better when things don't go well.

I know I’m late to this thread but this is 110% true. I wish I was joking but I recently asked for a raise at my job and the very first thing out of my bosses mouth was “you drive a nicer car than anyone here, you don’t need a raise”. Really kind of sucks honestly.

Sorry I’m good at managing my money? By no means am I rich either, I just do well with what I have.

I would take this to HR at your company.

And if they don't address this, find another job.

That company may not be worth your time and energy.

Boss is an asshole. A raise has nothing to do with need. Its all about your value to the company. If you are a producer you are deserving of a raise.

Would not plan on a long term career with this company.

That is Uber f***ed up. As other's said, find a new job, file a complaint with HR.

Agreed.

In my experience, not given at least a yearly raise can only mean two things:

1) the company is doing poorly and/or not meeting their quotas.

2) they don't think you are a valued employee....which means its time to look elsewhere.

Add jewelry too! Wife LOVES jewelry....

I hear you on the home improvement front....just had our driveway completely redone. Been parking on the street for weeks because it's been so hot out lately.

Ditto. In 2002 (the Dot.com bust) I was a junior partner in the Silicon Valley office of a (then) large law firm. The firm announced that there would be no bonuses that year due to the "current economic realities." A senior partner who occasionally mentored me said "sit here" (in a chair outside the managing partner's office) while he went in and left the door slightly ajar. The gist of the conversation I overheard started with "I brought in $8 million in business last year and I did not get a new Porsche last year." Guess who had a new Porsche 6 weeks later.

Everyone in my office loves the car and raves about how cool it is every time it pulls up. Granted I work from home and my coworker is my dog… but that's neither here nor there.

I mean let's keep it real…

The car is pretty damn impressive.

If you're not a car enthusiast and you gotta explain what an M3 is and the price, most will be impressed.

Even if you have a $100K F150 Lariat Lightning an M3 is impressive

At what point is the cost of the car absurd relative to the amount of good that could be done with the money if used to help people?
I think about that some times too. Just smaller scale. Some of my friends have been or currently are dealing with personal finance issues, and I look at the car and think "I could've helped instead of getting this car". But I also remember that we are not directly responsible for the happiness or condition of other people. Unless we brought them into this world!

I get what you're saying though. No matter what, money spent on things could've went to helping people. No one (well except for the obscenely wealthy) has enough money to take care of everyone in the world, so there is no need to place that mental burden on yourself when you get something you worked to have. Even if all of us on this forum combined our incomes, we wouldn't be able to make a dent to causes like homelessness or child hunger in a single U.S State. I'm not saying that those causes are unsolvable or that we shouldn't care because we can't 100% fix it. But a bit here or there, some extra cash you have laying around donated to an organization that handles these things will be as effective as you dedicating a Porsche 911 worth of lump sum.

Enjoy what you have, donate what you can/want, don't guilt yourself for the things you earned.

p.s - people will always try to suggest how they would spend your money. Everyone is a saint in their head.

Value yourself and the work you do, friend. One of the best things is to look around for jobs similar to yours that offer more compensation, and leverage that for your benefit. 10 years is a long time to have your company devalue you. Quite literally too, if they're not giving you a raise at the minimum of the rate of inflation, you're being paid less and less relative to the economy. I know you probably know that already, but value yourself more.

Isn't that discrimination? Find a different job. Your boss is toxic and probably a bit on the egotistical side. One of my direct reports actually earn a bit more than me and wouldn't mind one bit if he drives a lambo for all I care. I'd ask him to let me drive it.

True, true. I'm not tripping as much as this post might make it seem. I have no ill feelings of my co-workers. I just found the reaction odd and it does cause me to be a bit guarded about my interests and possessions in the workplace. But we move on... Was really just curious to hear other people's stories here.
Do you work at Panda Express?
Kidding aside, as you know $100k cars are a dime a dozen on the peninsula. It takes an OTT exhaust or a Ferarri/Lambo/McClaren to get people to look up from their device.
TBH it just sounds like socially awkward developers trying to joke around and not doing a great job of it.

When not WFH, I'm in the city now, but always enjoyed seeing actual fun cars in the business parks down there and not another Tesla or some SUV
