There's a saying: "in my 30's, I cared what people thought about me...in my 40's I stopped caring what people thought about me...in my 50's I realized that nobody's thinking about me".

Roll with it and don't read too much into it.

True, true. I'm not tripping as much as this post might make it seem. I have no ill feelings of my co-workers. I just found the reaction odd and it does cause me to be a bit guarded about my interests and possessions in the workplace. But we move on... Was really just curious to hear other people's stories here.

my coworkers are fellow sales people with company cars. we just bitch about how enterprise fleet keeps switching brands every 3 years lol.i do like the nissan murano though. i would never drive my m4 to visit customers though. gotta stay humble

I don't have mine yet, but I told someone at my office after I put in my m3 order in January (he's into cars too, used to have an XM6 until recently). Of course he went and mentioned it to someone, who mentioned it to someone, etc and now most of the company knows. I don't ever bring it up since I tend to avoid attention, but some of them are really excited for me and ask about it's progress which is cool.

For me, it's actually my parents that have been pretty dickish about it. They're the kind of people that think any brand new car is a waste of money, and anything above a Honda is ostentatious. Recently I was out to dinner with them and on the way back a nice looking Merc SUV passed us and my dad was like 'look at this asshole with his 80k$ car' and it was just like really.... cmon man.

I don't understand why any manager/employer wouldn't want their employees to succeed and have the nicer things in life.

If they are happy I am happy knowing we helped them along the way. They certainly earned it.

I bought my car in December 2021 snd was hesitant to drive to work because I knew based on my income I should not own this car. My dad never drove his new cars to work because he saw one of his co-workers get let go after the manager asked him about cat. Different times back then but some people are still the same. I finally said the hell with it and drove my car because it was sitting in garage with no miles on it hardly and my payment kept coming out my account.
Ironic this conversation has started because my big boss came out today asking my co-worker about my car. I cam hear my dad saying I told you not to drive it to work.

I am lucky at my job there is just enough of a car culture that nothing like that happens really. When cars come up people are interested and excited for folks. After a couple friendly jokes about the grille (as I expected) everyone was cool when I shared the M4 purchase.

Me too man! When I got my X3m I was parking it far away from the office and people started to ask where's my blue car (when I started this job I had a S4). No one in my office is a car person, no one understands the automotive history of these cars, no one understands the engineering or time spent perfecting these types of cars. I don't care as much as I used to. But when my manager whom I sit next to, decided to pull up the BWM website in front of me to check out the price of my car, it threw me off guard. Who the f does that. Keep your nose out of other peoples business, and you will live a much happier life.

Not coworkers but more social. I live on the Florida panhandle and golf with a bunch of retired guys. Bought the wife a 2022 BMW X7, and at the same time, put a deposit on a spec 2022 M4 Convertible the dealer had in production and due in a couple of months. There were lots of "Must be nice to be retired and driving 2 new BMWs!" comments. It was a little bothersome at first, but when it didn't stop, I doubled down and commented, "I can't wait until 8 more months and I turn 70. Then I can start drawing my Social Security!" That stopped any further comments. A bit passive aggressive, I know, but warranted.

I am a bit uncomfortable thinking about driving my M into the office when that day comes. I almost bought a black M since I have a black 440 to perhaps throw some off. 6 years with the company and I will be on my 6th car. Yep another new car but I think this is the one. My plan is to make this one a keeper and last ICE before I go electric.
