I get that shit all the time. My manager actually went to bmwusa.com to look up my car, good thing she is stupid enough not figure out which X3 I have.

Not going to lie, I am a little hesitant to pull up in a M3 when I get it.

When I was commuting to the office, I just mention my commuter car, a BMW i3.

"The weird looking EV that BMW makes."

Then I get one of those "oh so you've given up in life!" looks!

I didn't mention my M3 CS (at the time) to anyone but my close coworkers.

My old job was kinda like that, but it was less snarky fortunately (I think). I worked my way to an older c63, no batted an eye. I had to drop it cause it took a massive AMG level shit while I was driving one day so I picked up a '21 c43. That caught the attention really fast for some reason. People were like "we work the same job, you gotta be selling something on the side". We're in sales, I just work hard and don't have kids to feed.

Then valentines day came around and they were talking about gifts and then it rolled to me. Sheepishly, but with some pride I said I got my SO a bangle from David Yurman. Next thing you know, I'm Mr. Yurman that probably sells drugs on the side or some other illegal occupation. Being called Mr. Yurman or being called out for a "nicer" car than my coworkers didn't bother me. It was just that they assumed I HAD to be doing some bullshit to afford what I did. It wasn't anything crazy, I just made some good sales and saved my paychecks after xmas to surprise the woman of my life. I think in our cases, people forget that we all have different circumstances. They can't wrap their head around what the process of getting what we have is, the situations we live day by day, or the context of what we drive outside of brand stigma. And because of that, we get the ever so nice: "must be nice".

Ignore people's comments and what others think. It will save you a lifetime of frustration. Hec, you bought an M4 with an "ugly" grille as noted by most pundits and many car enthusiasts, so you already don't care about what many think. You ignored the masses and bought the G8X anyway.

So, pay no attention to those people at work's comments too. Don't let their insecurity affect your sanctity.

Some love my car, some don't...and I don't care. I bought it for me, and I trust my own eyes. Some people think I'm loaded because I can afford multiple fun cars, but most don't care.

And, I have friends who drive around in minivans and hybrid Accords & Camry's, yet own multiple multi-million dollar homes. Wealth often can't be determined by what one drives.

Last, I never EVER lose sight of the fact that I'm so very fortunate...

"If you are more fortunate than others, it is better to build a longer table than a taller fence."

I bought a brand new Audi before joining my first job in a German company and my Chief would pass sarcastic comments every time i see him. I never got a proper raise for 6 years even though i was one of the top performers in the team. I eventually left the team because of this issue and would never take my fun cars to my workplace.

I'm surprised you waited 6 whole years before leaving....I would have left after two!

That's nuts, hopefully where you work now treats you much better! Life got a lot better after I moved jobs to where everyone does pretty well for themselves. More support from coworkers and management, emotionally and work-wise.

So true. I also think people don't consider what a spouse or SO might make to contribute to the household income. My wife does very well for herself (maybe better than me depending on how you look at it) and we are fortunate to be able to afford our lifestyle. My co-workers just see ME and only ME when it comes to these conversations.

Too much politics within the team and most team members didnt like how he treated his employees. I switched jobs twice after that and currently in a much better place.

Do people really think that about BMWs? I never got that vibe. It's not like you are pulling in, in a lambo or some super flamboyant car. At the end of the day it's still a 3 series. If it was m8 comp or something, I'd get it. The only thing I commonly see about BMW drivers, is that we don't know how to signal and that we are douches... which to be fair, when I lived in long Island, I thought so too lol

Perspective boys and girls.

For most of my " working" life my fellow " co-workers" were worried about their families, their fellow Marines and what new ROE's were coming our way each day while fighting boredom, being shot at by the guy who we just had a CIA operative give 50k cash to the day before...wash, rinse...repeat.

Here in the land of plenty I chuckle at what gives people heartburn.

Everyone here is good, enjoy it in good health and remember how fortunate you are.

Lol at people not wanting to drive their M3/4's to work because of what their coworkers would think.

Eff that. Financially I got my ducks in a row early on. I don't order takeout or $5 lattes everyday, don't wear logo garbage, don't have cable TV, but I will drive my M3 (or current S5 SB) with a shiit eating grin to work every single day. And everyone else that's jealous can suck it.

I share the same feeling as you.

I sold my F80 and ended up picking up a 4Runner as a stop gap vehicle (weird transition, I know, but I got it at MSRP and knew it would have a high resale value).

Whenever I mention I sold my M3 to my coworkers they always say "I bet you're saving so much driving a Toyota now" or "good you got out of that money pit". They seem appalled when I mention the 4Runner is costing me more to own due to gas prices and if it weren't for ToyotaCare, I'd be spending more on regular scheduled maintenance on the Toyota than the M3 due to FCP Euro being a thing.

I started getting this bullshit in my neighborhood now too.

Moved to a new place last year, and we have 5 cars. 2 of them are only driven in the summer (M3 and Z3). Plus we have a boat, and live in MT, so having a pickup truck is a Good Thing.

One of the neighbors comes up to my wife and asks, "you guys think you have enough cars?"

I SO wanted to ask "you guys think you have enough kids?"

We have 0 kids, I've worked my ass off for 35 years, 3 of the 5 cars are paid off. I can easily afford all the toys we have.

They have 3 kids and obviously don't appreciate vehicles (nor could they afford anything other than old Toyotas given all the mouths they have to feed, clothe and educate).

Its kinda amazing how tone deaf/lacking self-awareness people have gotten in recent years.

And don't even get me started on any sort of environmental impact discussion, which I'm sure is where they are coming from. Again, completely tone deaf. Somehow 3 more humans walking the earth flies under the self-righteous "eco-conscienceness" radar in their minds.
