Got kinda two flip versions on that (but the moral is haters gonna hate).

I worked as a computer programmer for a stretch. A company VP (son of the founder) drove a corvette and one day he asked my department head "Who is the c_s_er who owns the Jensen Healy (noted in my signature below)." That tanked a three month project and I had a better job that afternoon.

Years later as an industrial engineer for a big company I bought a 450SL (not noted below). The VP of sales made a big deal of saying, in a meeting with many people present, "Oh I have one of those. What did you pay for yours?" I answered. Apparently he had been bragging and most people in the room were odiously informed of what he had paid. Turns out I had paid $3k less for mine. The VP I reported to then asked "In sales aren't you supposed to know how to negotiate." Priceless; an enemy for live but an impotent enemy.

It's funny how their perception works on German brands when there's 2 brand new Grand Wagoneers parked in front of the office building.
You guys need new coworkers lol, I took one of my coworkers to the office one day in my M4 and fast forward 4 months, he has one too 🤣

I likely won't drive mine to work either even though it is not much more than my truck (f150) but is is peoples perception of the brand. So dumb. And ya, we have tons of king ranches and denalis and escalades, but BMW means rich even when a new escalade is 6 figures. And a bmw can be had as a 2 series for $35K. I hate the stigma people have. This is probably the biggest complaint my SO has on me getting this car.

Anyway we can spin this thread to having it be a warranty issue so we can throw in "boy on bike" jokes?

Whenever the topic of cars come up I just say I drive a 3 series. That's it and move on. I never get into details around automobiles because the majority of people will judge you based on your car brand. In the Bay Area a 3 series is pretty common so it's not a big deal but I can see it being a different story in a rural part of the country.

It was a touch embarrassing so I never wore it to work again. Again, maybe its in my head or maybe it is just her....yet everyone jumped on the comment bandwagon after her "Mr. BMW" comment. I think it was my boss sharing this sentiment that really irked me. I mean, she makes waaaay more than I do.
I bet your boss has some expensive SUV, couple designer bags, shoes, jewelry etc. I hate when people have to make a big deal out of what people do with their money. Wear the jacket, drive the car.

I am at the point where everyone judges you for everything and I do not care. You drive a Nissan, you must be poor, you drive a BMW, you must be rich. You wear designer, rich, you wear simple clothes', poor. You cannot please anyone anymore. It drives me insane.

Same goes for all the BMW/Benz/Audi drivers who have a clapped out 10 year old 325/c250/a4 and want to flex on someone with a Ford Truck. Happens to me all the time. Uh dude, your car is a citizen now it's so old. But if it makes you happy that is all that matters. No need to play the size game.

By default, I don't talk about the nice shit I own with people I work with or don't know well...heck, I don't even wear my nice watches to work, and all my work clothes come from a Mall.

But questions do eventually come up when they see me walking out from my current whip....."Oooo, nice car, what is that?".

I answer "A Macan"...."A what?" they usually say after, then I reply "An SUV". The few that do know say "Nice ride" and it ends there. You'd be surprised how many young people these days have never even heard of a Macan or an M3....

I know we can't talk about religion, sexual orientation, gender, politics, etc in the workplace but now we are threatening lawsuits over a light hearted conversation about car choices. : I really need to retire and soon before someone that works for me gets any ideas.

This is spot on. I remember in high school, parents gave this kid a lot of flack for having a base BMW 323. Yet no one batted eye at the loaded V8 Grand Cherokees that many other kids had (which cost more).

There is a thread on here that reads (what's your favorite shoe when you drive your bmw) or something to that nature. That doesn't help with stereo typing.

Everyone spends money differently. The same people who are telling you. You are rich. Go on a 15k vacation to Italy each year. Or they go to expensive dinners. I spend my money on my house and cars. I don't care about expensive dinners, vacations or jewelry for the wife.

I get that from my neighbors all the time. I live alone in a new home, change my cars yearly and etc. My excuse is always the same, I'm a divorced and single man, I have nobody to tell me no 🤷🏾🤣

Coworkers are all car peps. So we're a bad influence towards each other. Then again we're all Airplane mechanics.

I'm the exact same! My money goes to physical items and fun activities with my son. I refuse to drop 8-10k on a week long vacation or experience.

When I worked corporate, I leased an Audi A3 for $259/month after like $1500 drive off and my bosses were making snarky comments of the same caliber. It was really annoying but the reality was I had lowered my payment compared to my previous Japanese car and downsized the motor to a 4cyl for better gas. The car was cheaper to run overall and they had never made any comments about my more expensive Japanese car. Some people have a 'bad eye' - just ignore them but also do your best to never show someone an expensive item. Even if it was a gift or you saved for a decade to treat yourself.

I had co-workers just like that that made comments about my car, my clothes and the food I ate…it wasn’t annoying but I didn’t like the attention. So glad I work from home now. Outside of my neighbors and a few of my car friends, no one knows that I drive an M4.
