This is why I hate to mention my car outside of the enthusiast community...

Was having a casual chat with my co-workers before a meeting. One of them who owns a nice VW SUV mentioned her car being in the shop for issues. Conversation turned to the subject of brands and their reliability then to everyone asking each other what kind of car they own. When the question came to me I just said "BMW", no mention of what model. The four other people immediately did the...."Ohhh...look out...I guess you make a ton of money...my bad...Mr. BMW (this included my boss)."

I just really hate this. I'm not rich.....very fortunate compared to others and, yes, able to comfortably afford my M3. But the perception by others.... I guess it is just in my head and I am sure it was harmless..but still. haha.

Guess it depends on where you are located. I see as many BMWs a day as I do Hondas. Means nothing in terms of wealth. I got a guy that lives a few doors down, mid 20s, college grad, drives a new M3. Can't afford to move out because he spent too much on car.

And here I am as having a picture of my M3 as my avatar on Teams at work.

If anyone tries to make a quip like that I usually just laugh and tell them I don't make good money but I have an excellent credit score that lets me get into all kinds of debt!

Usually though the image just makes for a nice little ice breaker at the start of meetings and inspires some cool conversation.

Yup. I don't drive mine to work either.
It's funny how their perception works on German brands when there's 2 brand new Grand Wagoneers parked in front of the office building.

Agree. I am in Silicon Valley and BMWs and Teslas are like Accords out here. Another reason why the reaction seems odd to me and why I just don't talk about, really, any of my hobbies or possessions outside of family and good friends. I wear crap watches and t-shirts to work for this reason as well.

Even more of a ridiculous comment because you didn't mention the year or the model. A brand new Honda Accord is worth more than a 20-year old 325i.

You need to find a new job. If they're making decisions on things your wear and drive - get out of there. Fast!

A 20 year old 325i probably costs a hell of a lot more than the accord to maintain though

Last time I heard something like this is was from a coworker in the same GS grade as me who was, mere moments earlier, complaining about spending $600 a week feeding his family of 7 on a single income. My response was something along the lines of "well, I spend about $80 a week feeding just myself and about $20 a week feeding the cats..."

Salary alone means nothing.

You're just humble, and that's a good thing!

I feel this way sometimes, but it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

We're in a huge corporate gated campus along with other sister companies in the compound.
A new company recently launched and moved in downstairs with brand new vehicles.
Not sure if they're corporate owned or personal vehicles, but I know they easily go for 6 figures these days. lol

Good point! Although I doubt their reaction took that into consideration.

All BMW owners are rich, huh?

I'll be purchasing my new M3 outright with a slightly used Porsche Macan & cash....does this classify me as rich too?

"Rich" to me is not having to go to work anymore for a living, and I'm not at that point yet....especially with my expensive toy habit....

I actually love my job/company. But, ya, I do have to keep a low profile. The same employee made a big deal out of a Supreme North Face jacket I wore to work once (very low-key jacket with a small Supreme logo, BTW,...not obnoxious like some of their stuff). It was a touch embarrassing so I never wore it to work again. Again, maybe its in my head or maybe it is just her....yet everyone jumped on the comment bandwagon after her "Mr. BMW" comment. I think it was my boss sharing this sentiment that really irked me. I mean, she makes waaaay more than I do.

Report your boss to HR. You could file a dissemination lawsuit based on the things they're saying IE Toxic Workplace environment.

Power has shifted to the 'workers' now so you have a lot of options here
