I'd expect the M3 CS to be seriously good. Just don't expect it to cost less than the M5 CS and M4 CSL do.
Why not?
Cause it's the exact same engine output, similar lightweight materials as the CSL, + the added complexity of a 4WD system tuned to CS standards. The M5 CS was priced prior to inflation at $143,995 and the CSL is priced at 140,995 in the middle of inflation.

As the CS will be sold after the CSL production has ended, and some people are rumoring it could be even more limited, why would it cost $20k-$30k less? I see a lot of posts where people are hoping for this and I think they are going to be disappointed. It's not going to be a "lesser" car than the CSL.

I have a waitlist spot reserved at my dealer for the CS, but I'm expecting it will cost around $140k.

Yeah I hope most of the attributes transfer over to the CS.

Would be wild if folks like Sport Auto run CSL and M3CS around the ring and get similar times.

7:20 sport sedan would be epic.

Tell me about it. There was a guy (suppose to be working for BMW) and is expecting CS to be priced in the 90s.

Was an easy decision for me. Even if the CSL came to the US I still would have zero interest in the car.

Oops. My bad. Regardless, zero interest in the M4 no matter what the designation is.

If you haven't sat in and/or driven an M5CS before deciding, you should. M5CS has an identity crisis, the CSL knows what it is.

After the E39 and E60 I have a soft spot for family sedans that drives like bonafide sports cars. M5CS easy choice. The CSL is a beast in its own but it’s a bit neither here or there in terms of a track car and luxury car. The M5CS is a cleancut monster business/family sedan.

What is the CSL then? No cage. Doesn't seem nearly as raw as the M4 GTS. Visually, barely different than a standard M4.

What am I missing that makes it seem like the M5 CS has an identify crisis and the M4 CSL doesn't?

My take on it…. Purely depends on what you want and plan to use the vehicle for.

I had an M5 CS, had being the main part. Kept it 6 months found it a great car. Definitely best M5 (after having F10's and F90's already) but for my I also have F95 X5M and found the CS a lot harder to use daily so ended up using X5 more. I also didn't like a few features on the CS. "Lightweight version" but kept 4 zone climate control, had small wireless charger, seats pain to get in and out daily and finally in the UK lack of exhaust noise. I'm being picky (you can paying what they are) but the car didn't personally work for me and I found myself using the X5M Competition or my M2 Competition. Note you can have both these cars for not much over the cost of the M5CS….

The M5CS was my special car but never gave that feeling to me. Which was a shame considering I love BMW's. I would have M5 Competition and save the money.

Fast forward to current day I have M4CSL on order and M3 Touring. Now I'm planning to sell my M2 Competition and replace with CSL. So it's a similar vehicle, great B round blaster and track days. Not as heavy/large as the M5CS so more suited to my needs and finally not similar to the X5M Competition.

You may ask but having M4 CSL and M3 Touring is same as X5M and M5CS but it's not. One is more hardcore road / track focused with RWD and the other daily use with Comfort seats (not carbon buckets) and 4WD… it may not work but that's my thoughts.

To sum up I personally don't think the cars are really comparable as they do different jobs! The CS purely didn't work for me! The CSL SHOULD work for my requirements.

PS save your money as above and by F90 M5 Competition over CS. 😅

I think he's implying that the M5CS (or M5 in general) are bought by people who might or might not want a "true M performance car" and prioritizes daily comfort with speed rather than having that "race car" feel a CSL would offer. Whereas the CSL you know why people get it, although i don't know why, not for that 140k price tag lol.

I would still pick the M5CS. Better soundtrack, more road presence, better overall usability, faster in the real world.

That really kind of sums up what I am referring to.

The CSL doesn't need a cage, lol, name the vehicles that come with a cage from the factory. Now name the ones that don't that are unreal performance/track cars....there are quite a few. Cage means nothing. The GTS flopped because it had a cage, adjustable wing, and water injection, which sound cool on paper but no so much in reality.

On the other hand, the M5CS (and I have had a 2022 X5M and a 19 M5 Comp, both of which I loved) is a four door mostly uncompromised daily driver type of vehicle with seats that say, "Don't daily drive me, just impress three friends once." IMO, they took an already really great car, made it better, and then made it undriveable for it's natural habitat with the seats.

The seats in a car like the CSL make perfect sense and serve the purpose. In a four door with backseats, it takes away from the car. Sorry, it's just my opinion, the M5CS otherwise is very nice.

The thread is M4CSL or M5CS, so M4CSL because both are set up to be more track oriented but really, an M5CS on the track is not going to be the same as the M4CSL, the CSL is the obvious choice. For daily driving, the answer is neither car is right, which leaves the M5CS sort of out in the cold, that's what I guess I mean by identity crisis.

Well, this is one way to look at the debate between the M5 CS and the M5 Comp.

Interesting Dale - thanks for posting your views. I'd pick M4 CSL over M5 CS, our other daily is an X3M Comp and that works really well for me. To have an M4 CSL as a bit of a toy for high days and track days really appeals to me.

Always great to get your opinion Dale. I felt the same way about the M5 CS at the time, as i didn't see myself using it daily but i also didn't think it was best suited for weekend/track compared to others. This is ultimately why i didn't take delivery of my order.

I think it was a stunning technical achievement and made for an amazing car for road tests and comparison tests (obviously won Evo CoTY over a 992 GT3), but as a ownership proposition, probably not the easiest thing to live with day-in/day-out as some have noted in their reviews. This is why many of them have come up for sale in the U.S. as healthy premiums were available to the sellers.

IIRC, he was a dealership employee, and at this stage, they have as much info as we do. Plus, if it's the guy I am thinking about, I don't think he knew too much of anything (that's why he was here).
