M4 Now, or Wait Some Months

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hey, all.

I've been making a few threads about navigating the waters of a new M4C purchase. Everyone here has been INCREDIBLY helpful and I can't say enough about how positive and awesome this community is here.
This is my first foray into buying a highly desired car.
I had an allocation on a C8 Corvette in the early days and dropped it when the dealer told me I should expect at least a $20k ADM upon delivery.

Here is the "long" of it:

I was on a previous allocation list that had a delivery of a 2023 being 8+ months.

So in my haste, I actually found a car that is spec'd exactly how I would spec a custom order (Brooklyn Grey, Fiona Red CFB's, carbon interior, carbon exterior, etc...) - essentially fully loaded, less the CCB's.
This car is a 2022 (out of state) with around 1,300 miles for $101k. It would cost $2.5k to ship it, so I would be all in, less taxes, at $103.5k but a 2022 with 1.3k miles.

Here's the rub. On the advice of a fellow bimmerpost bro, I visited a well liked dealership in the area that will not charge above MSRP for these for in-state folks as a courtesy. This is awesome, because on the way to seeing them, I called another dealership I thought had some inventory but it was sold and they flat out told me on the phone that any new M3/M4, even if customer ordered new, will incur a $10-20k ADM.

So needless to say, a dealership willing to stick to MSRP and provide great customer customer experience was incredible. I'm not crazy about a $2.5 NON-refundable deposit, but I'm not surprised they do that since they actually stick to MSRP.

The good dealer happened to have a fresh allocation open. Production begins in Sept. and delivery estimated in Nov... so 4 months, which is not bad at all. And this is for a 2023 with "no miles". And it's actually cheaper.

Breakout goes down like this:

Get car spec'd how I want now and pay $2.5k to ship from TX.
- 2022 MY
- 1,300 miles
- Will run ~ $104k before taxes and fees (def. above MSRP)

Order through dealer for a brand new car
- 2023 MY
- 0 miles
- Will run ~ $97k before taxes and fees (MSRP)
- But have to wait until November, when winter is already here where I live

I'm pretty impatient, but I currently drive a 400whp modded M235 I love driving, so the more I think on it the more silly it seems not to wait and pay less for a newer and less mileage car. Plus, I'll be financing, so I would assume the newer model year of 2023 vs 2022 will help with resale...

Thoughts?

Wait brother! Your driving something you like anyway. Makes ZERO sense to buy the one that cost more!

How much over MSRP would that used one be?

Normally I would say wait for a new one, I always have in pervious cars, but I had this same dilemma 2 months ago with my M4. I wanted the car now though and did not want to wait. That said the used one I got was almost exactly what I wanted other than color and was not above MSRP. So I pulled the trigger on the used car, and have been loving the last two months rather than waiting for a new zero mile car. Also keep in mind that no matter what anyone says now about any dealer there is always a chance they add a mark-up, even "in writing" means nothing. Anything you get in writing now is not a legally binding contract for when the car shows up.

Life is short, get what you really want though. You have a car you love now so wait for the new one if that will make you happy, or get the one one "in front of you" now and enjoy not waiting... you also will not need to wait for the break-in time.

Do you like ID7 or ID8?
This is also a consideration.

I don't even see why you'd even consider the 2022 at this point.

In this case the mark up is negligible…

If it's not a huge hit to the budget I'd take the current one available.

The resale on the 240 will drop although not by much.

What you save in new car MSRP you "lose time" and "depreciation of the 240".

See if you can negotiate the current car price down a bit.

Very tough call OP…

I think you will definitely get edgy waiting for the new car even though the 240 has 400 hp

All the best!

Oh yeah just noticed you're going COMP

That's 500+HP 480 torque yikes

I'd wait. Paying more for a used 22 doesn't make sense.

You have a car to use now, use that and wait. The waiting is painful i know. I waited 4 months for mine. I thought i could do it when the dealer said 2 months or so. I said that's easy. 2 months past and i was pulling my hair out. So i know the feeling. But the 4 months essentially went by pretty quick.

Get the newer car, with 0 miles, for less. Just wait it out.

Newer is the name of the game here.

No brainer wait! No need to pay extra money if your pretty much guaranteed to get a new one and pay less. Patience is key, you have a capable car now.

I'm also in the wait camp. You will pay more for a car that will be worth less. Wait it out and enjoy your modified 235 for a few more months.

Yes, my vote is with the waiting team also. I was also able to get an allocation in late April for a MY22. I know the waiting is brutal, but it'll be YOUR new car from day 1, spec'd as you like it, and you don't have to wonder if anyone abused it early in as some M owners do. Plus, you have a fun car to drive to keep the grin on your face in the interim.

My car is currently at the port. I pretraded my M5, but I will also unloading my X1 at delivery. (Used car prices seem to be holding a bit for now). Best of luck to you whatever your decision.

Wait. And don’t worry about deposit, your a serious buyer and would only back out due to a major life event. Dealer would give it back in that situation. If you reached this point where you can spec a car you want then I agree get one made for you.

One of the unexpected joys of my life was ordering my first BMW, an M240 convertible. I didn’t know you could even do such a thing as order a car and watch it from production number/Vin to the very hour it’s delivered to your dealership. Truly fun, rewarding and amazing experience. My third ordered car arrives at my dealership tomorrow and even with Covid/Ukraine delays it’s still been an absolute blast! You get to build/buy a car made specifically for you?!!? Wait, you’ll be happy/satisfied that you did.

Yeah, you'll be waiting until at least November if everything goes perfectly. Honestly I would have taken a build like mine for a premium if I could have bypassed waiting but one never popped up. Lots of White on Blacks and Black on Blacks, RWDs, etc.

I'm glad I have it now but the waiting sucked. M4's seem a lot easier to find, so there's that. And they are not getting iDrive 8 for 2023, just the M3s.

No brained. WAIT and enjoy the entire process from ordering to tracking your build to delivery. If you are close enough to Spartanburg, SC make it a fun PCD delivery and ride home on top of it! Oh and browse the catalogue for some additional port installed options…..when you build your own car there is so much you can do.

Good luck while you are waiting ….
