Rear deck rattle

My car has just hit the 1200 mile mark. I have a sst valve controller and MAD non-res mid pipe. I have this metal rattling noise coming from the rear deck or somewhere in that vicinity. I tried putting felt tape around the rear passenger seat latches which didnt work and put tape on the rear seat release in the trunk. I had it at the dealer today for the 1200 mile service but they couldnt replicate the sound...shocking ha. Any idea what could be causing this sound, its driving me crazy.

Here is a clip. You can really hear it at the 40 second mark.https://streamable.com/nzx098

Have you tried knocking with your hand on the interior side of the deck? I would then do the same but from inside the trunk.

See if that replicates the noise. If not, I'd have someone ride in the back and pinpoint it.

Did you try putting tape on the rear seat release cables? Those can vibrate and hit the metal frame

Try putting some foam tape or foam cord between the glass and the deck lid. That fixed mine. I'm going to remove it for the next BMW service and have something hopefully more permanent.

Can you explain how to get the foam back there? You have any pictures?

Oh man, we have the same issue after installing the AA Equal length. Doesn't happen all the time just when on full load from time to time but it's annoying as hell. Thought It was the speaker cover, but doesn't seem so and also checked the clips. Will try the foam option. Glad I saw this post.

Would you mind clarifying what location or did you mean the whole thing?

To me, it seems the rear deck lid would need to come off to identify the rattle imo. Not sure how hard it is to remove.

I don't have a midpipe but I had the sound also. The dealership removed rear shelf and lined it with felt rape. It's been quite since then.

Probably meant wedging foam tape where the rear of the shelf meets the glass.

I have this annoying rattle too. I believe its the black tray hidden under that rear shelf vent that is very close to the window. Somewhere on this forum, someone pointed it out because his window tinter used a wedge to apply tint down the window and that wedge hit that plastic tray we cant see and either cracked it or loosened it to the point that it rattles under certain harmonic instances. In my case, it only rattles on roads that are bumpy enough.

I need to tear into mine. But I do have this how too remove the shelf from bmw.

I placed a few short pieces of new clean Vascocel in the gap between the window and parcel shelf. It's invisible once inserted. We used it on low side pressure A/C suction lines in the trade. Lowe's has similar product.

I used the Vascocel due to old stock from my A/C Local 146 Plumbers and Pipefitters days. Cheap.

Back in the day the mechanics would ride in the trunk over RR tracks at Broadway St. (Broadway Hotel Brothel -Wild West) when Frank Kent Cadillac was in DT Fort Worth. It was hilarious. It was a good way to find rattles. One driving and the other in the trunk with the lid open.

I planned to take my rear shelf off this past weekend, but didnt get around to it. I did try the foam/rubber gasket idea and it seems to have worked. At least I think it did so far.

I used this and it wedged down between the glass and plastic very nicely.

I’ll take a pic soon. It’s hard to see. But yes that extra lip guides it perfectly into the area and so far is holding just fine.

The rubber strip I used was 5/8ths which seems about right. Looks like I could push mine in a little more in some places.

So far no more plastic rattle sounds rougher than normal roads.

That's really helpful, thanks for sharing a picture.

Has anyone had a rattle only on harsher bumps coming from the driver's storage compartment?

I really don't remember. The material is compressible. You cut it down to allow for insertion. I did not insert the entire 360 degree circumference. Cut a few pieces as required. I have used it for under dash rattles and for areas that need buffering. This stuff is used on your low side suction pressure on your outside HVAC unit as insulation.

Stuffed it in with a new clean paint stir stick.

Tried this, and although it seemed better, still had noise from time to time. I think I used a too thin off rubber piece. Redid it with foam, although, kinda worried I might not be able to get it out of there since it's easily rips. Ordered the Lowe's rubber piece that someone posted in this thread. Also put rubber pieces around the cable seat releases in the trunk just in case
When I tried to tap them, they kinda made someone similar noise so just to be safe. We'll see next time we take the car out if it helps.
