I am looking to schedule my 1200 mile break in service on my G80 and was wondering if it has to be done at an M Certified Center or any BMW dealership?
My local dealership isn’t an M certified center so wanted to see if it’s worth the longer drive just for this service.

Any BMW center is able to do it. I would make an appointment ahead of time and ask them to order the diff fluid that is needed before hand as it has been difficult to get recently.

From what I understand, the difference is only from a sales perspective. M Certified Dealers have the dedicated M showrooms and tend to get more allocations of M cars. Doesn't affect the service department.

I thought there were M certified technicians that differentiate themselves from non M dealers.

Nah, every dealer has technicians that work on M cars. It's basically a marketing gimmick to make you feel special that you bought from the M Cert dealer. I think at one time they were meant to have more access to M cars and service parts, etc. But now its basically a sales driver.

I bought mine from a "non-certified" center, had no problem getting an allocation, and no service issues so far.

For break in service I’d think that could be done by any dealer without concern. I purchased my G80 from a small dealer (for availaby reasons) but had my break in service done at a dealer that is M-certified and that made the top dealer list that was recently published. It’s a big shop. I just think that the certified dealer’s technicians will have more experience than the dealer where I purchased the car.

I agree with you hotsauce. The certified Mcenters are a sales thing, not a service thing. From my dealer’s site…

It’s literally an oil drain/fill and a diff fluid drain/fill. A gas station repair shop could do it as long as they had the right fluids on hand.
