Even with just an M3 (or M4) in the garage, we've all managed an automotive dream that most folk in the world won't ever be able to achieve. And a Cayman or 911 is the wrong car for a lot of folks' use case, even if they can get ahold of one without selling one of their children (note, my kids are cats...I wouldn't get much). In my group of friends, none of them can afford a new M car. A couple of them make about what I do, but they have kids that they pay for, and in one case a spouse that can't work. We just aren't rich folk, despite also not being poor folk. I still think about it, though. I've driven enough Porsches that I know what I'd get out of buying one, and I know what I'd lose. It's funny that my Porsche dreams were more reachable when I had my M2 and still owed money on it compared to now when I own my M3 outright. Some of that is inflation, but most of it is what Porsche and the overall car market has done to late model used 911s and 718s. I could trade the M3 in on a $130k low-end 911 and make the payments on the remainder of the price, but the lack of options would push the "what I'd lose" part of the equation way past the acceptable level. |

Well said mate.
Even if I could afford the GT3 I just can’t justify the ridiculous price difference between the two ($250K+ for a base spec) at least in Australia. Unless I win the lotto. For a regular street driver like me I am honestly not going to see any noticeable difference in the driving experience apart from of course the gorgeous engine sound. But not worth the 2.5x price difference IMO.

lets not kid ourselves the average bmw owner is very price sensitive and I'd go out on a limb and say the GT3 is the wrong car to compare the M3 to. A GT4 is far more apt and in todays money not too far off the M3. |

But I do agree that both these cars(M3 and GT3) aren’t comparable.

I’ve been considering getting a 911 T now that i’ve had the G80 for 2 years and 30k miles in. Only thing is it has 375 horsepower and $150k price tag optioned the way i want it.

I'm going to rent a Ferrari 812 one day, for like a day or 2, and I will drive it like I stole it. And then I'll happily give it back. I did that in a 458 Spider, had it for 4 days, and was worth every penny. And I was happy to give it back and not have to deal with owning it. But I love driving, not just the experience of being in an expensive car. So it's worth it to me, oftentimes beyond owning these cars, which come with a lot of worry and headaches. Just a thought... For me, it's $2,000 to $3,000 well spent, because the 458 experience was priceless. The 812 will be too (V12 Ferrari FTW!). A GT3, I could see owning, because I can beat on it and it holds up pretty well...but not at $250k, like you, it's just too much. I will hopefully find something between $175k and $200k. Even then, is the GT3 experience worth twice the price of a loaded M4? Debatable, especially if you're not tracking it. |

Even if I had the money and want to buy a Porsche, it still wouldn’t be a GT3. 992 Turbo S or nothing else. There is so much overhead in that car for easy power since it’s FI. Fuck NA. Lol

Additionally, the gt3 at around 250k even with markups is precisely why it’s flying off the shelves, ignoring Porsche artificially limiting the market but that’s my opinion. Honestly most bmw owners are too cheap to consider a 911 and that’s certainly fair I’m not going to argue that but there’s a reason for mile long wait lists and the secondary market still over msrp because the next level up from a gt3 are cars close to half a million or more (think 765LT and huracan sto). At that point it’s an investment and not something you can drive even occasionally My own gt3 has 16k miles and several track days. I paid for the whole car I’m gonna use all of it. I’ve successfully converted two of my friends into Porsche fanatics one of which bought his own 991.2 gt3 and the other is saving up. These guys like me were long time bmw owners I’ve said it before but if bmw could make a mid or rear engine car they would eat Porsches lunch and I’m all for it |

hilarious that you posted this today. I've owned a 991.2 a few years back and loved the car. and I'm constantly looked and calling dealers about getting into a 992. Not a GT3, but a T or S with a manual transmission. I actually got a call from the dealer a few days ago that he had a T allocation for me. at MSRP plus getting the 2 year maintenance and PPF ($6k or so) so not too bad since i'm actually getting something. After building the 911T i was at $145k. they offered me $60k for my 22 M3.. after taking a few nights to dwell on it, i couldn't fathom paying close to $100k on top of my car for a 911. Just doesn't make sense... today i told him i decided not to take the allocation. i feel like you posted this for me lol
*edit* i am in the market for an emira though

why would you think the emira would be underwhelming?

To OP’s point.
A buddy of mine purchased a 2020 911 S 7 speed manual. Kept the car 2 years put 7,000 miles Sold it and now has a C63s AMG The Porsche was cool but for him the value was not there. My M3 does it all. My real fun is on the 2022 R 1250 GS 40th Anniversary. Would be cool to also have a 911 but on an even trade it would be an inconvenience to have a 911 as a primary vehicle. |

Porsches can’t carry a set of tires or wheels and tires, so there’s also that. 😆 Not unless it’s a fast Macan, but then I’m sure Porsche snobs don’t consider those “true” Porsches. Lol

I don't understand this post. Everyone is in a different financial and personal situation. That situation changes over time. Buy what makes you feel good and fits your current lifestyle. There's always a better car and some people will never stop chasing the dragon.

I was speaking to those that, like myself and at least a few others, find themselves caught in that endless loop of searching for the upgrade, which in turn can diminish the ownership experience of a great car. Sometimes taking a minute to appreciate what you have is not a bad thing to do. There's not a whole lot else to understand.

Having owned Porsche GT cars and BMW’s I’ll say both have a lot to offer. Porsche still makes precision naturally aspirated tactile sports cars, and M division makes brutish hooligan turbo sleds with practicality, bags of speed, impeccably engineered and lots of fun to hoon. I am a big fan of both marques. At the end of the day an M3 and a GT3 are cars you buy to enjoy. They are for the heart, not for the accountant. Now I spend my time in the classifieds looking at 458’s. Enjoy the chase 👍
