Midpipe and nothing else!!

Hi to all,

I just want to get some more sound (and if it helps car's performance why not) on my 2022 G80 and don't have a big budget, by reading on this forum I determined that the midpipe would be my best option.

I was looking at the Dinan mid but noticed that they maintain the secondary cats, would this make it less loud and less performance (due to more restrictive flow) then a similar midpipe that has cats and resonators deleted (ex AA, Mad, Valvetronic).

Since I am on a budget I started to look at prices and different manufacturers and It also seems that the midpipe doubles in price when the cats are bypassed.
Just a small example of what I came up with:

Dinan midpipe approx 750$, MBRP midpipe approx 699$, (both don't bypass sec cats).
AA midpipe (non res) approx 1500$ and Valvetronics approx 1300$ ( both bypass sec cats and both resonators).

New to this exhaust stuff any info would be greatly appreciated.

Without going to look at those specific Dinan and MBRP pipes, they probably cost less because you are paying for a shorter section of the exhaust compared to a full midpipe like the other options you listed. Yes keeping secondary cats will mean less sound increase. If you're not planning to change anything else in the exhaust definitely go for one of the full midpipe options you listed. They are all good. If budget is concern wait around for a while and lookout for sales that happen pretty often. You can get 10 to 20% off several times a year from a lot of places.

in your case, i recommend a midpipe that removes all cats and resonators.

MAD, Valvetronic or Active Autowerks are all excellent options. It just depends on your budget and whether you want single or equal length design.

There’s a wealth of info on this topic. Many opinions, prices, etc. Do a Search and dive in! Im sure your head will spin . YouTube is also a good source. You’ll definitely find a midpipe, with or w/o cats that fits the sound to your liking as well as your budget. Good luck & happy hunting 😎.

I personally love the single midpipe note. You have a couple options here:

- Active Autowerke
- MAD
- Valvetronic Designs

Active is also making an equal length midpipe which could sound interesting too. My favorite of the bunch, and the smoothest sounding to my ears, is the Valvetronic midpipe. Both the AA and MAD sound VERY similar, just have a little more "turbulence" in the sound, if that makes any sense at all.

Any chance you could post a sound clip/vid? 🙂

Keen to buy one of these when they're next on sale

You definitely want to bypass the secondary cats if this is going to be your only exhaust mod.

I just had the Dinan x-pipe installed on my G83 yesterday and its great. Cold start is “perfectly obnoxious” and then settles down just right. Very happy with this mod!

"Perfectly obnoxious" by my hearing standards is 3.5 inch catless downpipes paired with just either the single midpipe or the equal length midpipe. I went for the single but I might switch out for the equal length because I feel like I want a bit more raspier exotic-like sound akin to what the e46 m3 sounded like

Add the Dahler exhaust valve controller to that midpipe and you’ll really be happy with it. Much lower, deeper tone and more aggressive, but quieted down with a push of a button!

Any videos of this? I’ve got the Dahler valve controller and it’s great, but wouldn’t mind a little more.

I don’t but I can try to grab one tomorrow. The videos never do the volume difference justice. It’s impressively loud with the Dinan + valves open. But what I really like is it goes from muffled to deep low bellow with zero rasp at any speed. I honestly like this basic setup better than most any full exhaust I’ve heard.

My Dinan midpipe just delivered. I had heard combining it with dahler gives it a deeper aggressive tone. Ive heard some of the full exhausts for these cars man and they sound so raspy and non intimidating lol.

Is there any performance loss with going to a single midpipe over an equal length? Seems like there is less volume to move the exhaust through.

In theory the el is going to have more resistance and higher egt's for one turbo bank due to the multiple bends and the overall exhaust length will much longer than the single as well.

Now what this means on the dyno has yet to be proven.
