Swapping a S58 or S55 into a 93 Defender, will it work

How do. Working with my boy on his 93 110 Defender. It needs a total rebuild. Part of this is him wanting to swap in a S58 or a S55 into it. Anyone ever heard of this or anything like it? Looking for any suggestion both pro & con

Thanks

M57 would be a better swap imo.

fall back position is a LS 3 engine, but that would scoot it along fairly well also

If there's a plug and play standalone available; very easy. Otherwise $$$$ and time. lots of time.

If I were to do some dumb shit I'd do a viper motor.

M57 diesel is ultra reliable, great torque, great sounds, lots available, fair pricing and better fuel economy; basically better suited for a defender imo but depends on use case. S58 would be great for a road only defender imo and then what’s the point in having a defender 😂.

Lots of videos online of them swapped as I considered it at one point.

current plan is to purchased a salvaged car. that then would have the ECU, all related wiring, transmission and transfer case

I wonder if it'll be that simple. There's so many modules and sensors. knowing Bmw id get evvvvvvvvverything has to be in or it won't work. Coming from someone who consistently gets them in over their head; that sounds like a scary project.

I'd consider the b58 or s58. Skip the s55.

With all the CAN shit and modules in modern cars, pulling all that out to put into basically an analog car is just asking for a nightmare. You’re probably better off doing a custom harness and using like a Motec M150 to run it. They already have code and experience running the S58 due to the drift program they are running for the drift brothers, so that’s already taken care of. The biggest thing would be mounts and physical install then wiring and should be good. The chassis it’s going into is pretty simple and no bs there to mess with I don’t think. I’d reach out to Motec and see what they got in that dept, including trans control questions too.

that ended up a strike out. it works for a racing motor, but not for a street type car

They have it but for a consumer like us it would cost roughly 10-20k for someone to get the di injection working properly on a motec. It would be easier to do a di delete. In the video they said it took them a few months with a dedicated motec tuner to get di working and that was with the help of bmw.
