No break-in service = no powertrain warranty?
Looking at used 22 M4 with 5k miles. The dealer knows the couple who traded it in and they were a wealthy older couple that just drove the car and never did the break in service. They are willing to be extremely aggressive on pricing as they basically stole the car on trade in.
I am really interested in the car, it's highly spec'd for a manual car. However is it just an accepted fact that no break-in service = no powertrain warranty. Or is that typically handled on a case by case basis with BMWNA? |

Yes! Your warranty will be partially voided if you do not perform service in a timely manner. However, the dealership must prove that your failure to service your car did without reasonable doubt cause the malfunction and need for repair
Probably best to get something in writing from them. |

It's not, they were very upfront that they know nothing about the car and were not aware of the run in service. They aren't disputing the fact that there could be warranty issues down the road. They are however willing to move the car for about 10k under what I would consider market value.

It might be worth calling the service department of your nearest BMW dealership and asking.

If the run in service wasnt completed, then technically at 5K miles you are basically at the mercy of BMW to determine if any drivetrain issue that your car suffers during the next 4 yrs of warranty is due to the lack of run in service. If someone has driven 5K miles in a year they knew what they were doing as BMW continues to alert you that your break in service is due and that its overdue. I dont know if you wanna risk drive train repairs for getting 10K under MSRP. M4 are easier to be had at MSRP and maybe even a discount if you are willing to look outside the area. I wouldnt take this deal esp from a non BMW dealer and not a certified preowned model.

Hyper aggressive sales people that can't commit to guarantees or warranties are super sketch. Gotta tell yourself that whatever deal they are trying to make you is never in your best interest. Sounds like they are trying to get your booty. |

The 1200 mile run-in service is free. They are absolutely within their legal rights to cancel your powertrain warranty if it's not done. |

A wealthy older couple sold their M4 competition to a used car lot?
Story would be a little less bogus if it was a white convertible in Florida. |

I met an 85 yo lady at the doctor once in a new 911 turbo, she said she gets a new one every year. It is totally possible.

Id go with jimbethesdas suggestion. Contact a local BMW dealer with the VIN. Better yet, take the VIN with you to the dealer. It's easier to get information out of them when you are in front of them. And you don't want to hear, "yeah, they won't cover any warranty." Find it in writing. Then make sure you report back here. We all want to know.
Like Aalfred said, the break in timer is on the dash, and it starts at 1,200 miles. "Break in mode" oil change due in 1,200 miles, 1,000 miles 800 miles, 600 miles. Due. It's literally a countdown on the dash from new. To get it turned off, you need to perform the run in service.

If it's BMW certified they have to honor the warranty. Plus these cars are not as fragile as people make them out to be. The car will be fine without a break in service. It's a very low risk.

Just not likely. Someone who buys a new 2022 M4 is not likely to sell to a used car lot. Possible not likely… I was in the Florida Keys about 5 years ago. I see this guy walking out a Walgreens with a cane long white grey hair. Dude could barely walk. I say to myself; “NO WAY” He contorts himself into a heavily modified newer Porsche 911 turbo. Thing was wicked bad @$$ and loud.” |

UPDATE: I called my local BMW dealer this morning with the Vin and they actually have record of the break-in @ 1045 miles and another service at 4,501 performed at a BMW dealer in the car's original home state.
I am not sure why everyone assumed the car was at a "used lot" ... I guess technically any new car dealer is a "used lot" as well. But it was just a dealer from a different brand that took the car on trade. Anyways I locked the deal in this morning... 2022 6 speed car, Carbon Buckets, Carbon Ceramic Brakes, Full Carbon exterior, and full PPF to boot. I got the car for 72k delivered 8 hours away. I feel like that's a steal considering the full PPF and the fact the car MSRP'd over $9x,xxx Last edited by B_davis; 02-10-2023 at 12:29 PM.. |

I will agree to disagree. Perhaps the previous owner did it themselves and there is no record. It is against Federal Law to deny warranty coverage because perhaps the owner did the service not the dealer. There would be no record of such service.

Either way, it seems the "break in service" was actually done at two different dealers, one of which was done at the correct mileage. So OP is all good. |
