I wonder if BMW's primary motivation for EVs is now making teslabros shut the hell up, like why the E30 came to be. 🍿

Still contemplating if I want a RWD vs AWD. I noticed on BMW's website the front wheels are still 19" and the rears are 20" for AWD. I have had AWD cars before (ex Audi S4) and always replaced all 4 tires at the same time even if only one really needed replacement.
With BMW is that no longer the case to have all 4 tires the same size? Maybe only the fronts/rears have to be replaced at the same time but not front and rears together? |

I've been leaning towards RWD as I'm in South Texas so weather isn't an issue (minus hurricanes). I've mainly owned AWD vehicles and having to change all 4 tires when 1 goes is a costly pain. I'm not sure if it's the same for the BMW's, but I would assume so. We also have an AWD SUV, so no need for another AWD.

The front diff is probably geared differently to handle the different tire rotation speeds. Also, Tire Rack will shave your new tire to your specified tread depth for a nominal fee so you don't have to replace all 4 at once.

AWD, because I live in Colorado and absolutely will be driving this in the mountains and snow. Resale too. Have heard from other dealers that they work harder to move RWD sedans because almost everything here is AWD. Want to make sure it’s easier to sell once the new model excitement dies down.

I have never heard that before. I was always told the OD need to be spot on or within a very tight tolerance. Not sure gearing can make up for that? Hopefully someone can confirm this. Rim size won't matter as long as the OD is good

So, front is (96.25 * 2) + 482.6 = 675.1mm and rear is (85.5 * 2) + 508 = 679mm The difference in wheel size is about 4mm Last edited by superbrew; 07-26-2021 at 01:16 PM.. |

Unless they just let the clutch slip constantly (which some cars do - my Focus RS does this), they need to spin the front wheels faster to make up the difference.

They probably just let the wheels scrub ever so slightly. |

AWD is just foreign to me tbh.
This thing launches so hard I just don't even see the need. Not even going to lie the lack of drama on launch with brand new tires was a little bothersome. Now that it's tuned and the tires are a little worn it's honestly much more fun to manage a bit of power yaw than to just blast off with no spin whatsoever. |

I'm in the position where I can choose to go AWD or RWD this time around (had a 2021 RWD before), and while I initially thought I was going AWD for sure (for the extra launch speed), the more I thought about it the more I wasn't sure it's worth the extra $4100. The car was ridiculously fast as is and I don't really need the extra traction (i'm in a dry state). I'd literally just be paying $4100 to launch it a little faster and I don't race nor do I track it regularly or anything.
Plus i'm not sure how spirited it will actually feel in its RWD mode (with the added xDrive weight, etc). Driving around in AWD would be boring AF so i'd have to change it to RWD mode every time I start it up to actually enjoy it as a daily driver. It would literally be $4100 to be able to set one of the M buttons to 4WD so I could launch it a little faster off the line at a stop light... and all other times I would be driving it in RWD mode like the regular comp. I can't justify that for the price increase in my case |
