Cell Phone Mounts - What are you using?

Hey guys,

Have a G80 in the hopper (currently in the paint shop) so I'm doing some shopping for accessories, one of them being a mount for my cell phone (I do have an iPhone).

I am used to using the air vent mounts but I've also seen these break the air vents if you are not careful (and fixing them is a pain in the arse).

Wondering if there are better alternatives out there. What is everyone using?

I use an air vent mount/case combo by pitaka, it's magnetic, and wirelessly charges!

The best there is. You will absolutely find nothing better. I have tried everything. I use two of them in both my vehicles. One to hold my primary phone in the other to hold the phone I use for my countermeasures.

Here’s a video I made of my car that shows my countermeasures but if you look towards the end you can see my phone holders. I hope this helps. Go to 1:40 if you want to go straight to the phone holders.

100% agree on proclip. Their mounts are solid and they are no-drill installs. I'm hoping they come out with a G80 specific mount soon as I don't like having stuff on my windshield. Their dash clip worked amazing in my F87

See my post above, according to ProClip the G20 mount is the same one as the G80, and it's the same mount for both LHD and RHD

Interesting. I hadn't heard of them. I've been using a cupholder wireless charger. Works well enough, but could be more wonderful. How stable is that mount in the vent? I've had issues with other similar ones coming out and getting loose in there.

I'm Android. Looking at their Android cases it seems like the camera bump bumps out so that the phone would wobble back and forth when you put it down on a desk.

The only things I haven't loved about them in the past is that the mounts can be a little on the large. And, when you mount a phone holder on that little ball the neck of the ball (if that makes sense) is too thick so you can't rotate the phone towards you enough.

I had the ball mount for years and yeah - it had limitations on how far it would turn one way or the other. it looks like Proclip ditched their partnership with that magnet company (ioMount) and now sell Scosche magnets instead. They even offer a 15 degree wedge so I ordered that and will report back.

So the one I use currently in my E53, used it in my F32, and plan to use it once the G80 comes in. So far it's been rock solid. the phone only came off the mount once, when hitting a hidden speed bump > 30 mph.

I have it for the iPhone XS which also has a camera bump. You're right, it does have a slight wobble, but I never really noticed it until you mentioned it, and I deliberately rocked it. When not touched, it rests on 3 points, camera bump and 2 bottom corners. I've dropped the phone multiple times, and never cracked a screen, so the super tight bumper does work well.

So I guess that is to say that the wobble from the case doesn't really bother you then? It seems like a bad design to me if you are trying to type on it sitting flat on a desk but maybe it's not as bad as I'm imagining. Seems like getting one more millimeter to the size of the case to make it flat on the back would have been a better design

Yeah, I guess. If I had to estimate, the camera bump is maybe half a mm, so not really noticeable. I think the whole selling point was a case so thin you wouldn't notice you had a case (it's just a couple layers of Carbon Fiber). Considering it probably behaves the same way without a case (camera bump rocking). I've had the case for 3 or 4 years now without noticing it.

I have one arriving tomorrow with the vent charger. We'll how it goes.

I used the Spiegel mount

I used the Spiegel mount on the passenger side of the center vents. I have a flat usb-c to usb-c cable coming to tuck into the console and hide the cabling. I really hate cables everywhere.
So far I really like it, it looks nice and doesn't obstruct anything.

So where do you have that wire running to? Still connected into the USB port between the cup holders?

I second this question. My 2017 330e had a USB port in the passenger footwell. Curious if it's there in the G80.

Sadly no. They got rid of the port under the passenger side.

Some nice mounts in here and lots of options!

I found a few on Amazon that I think may be a fit for me as what I'm looking for is something that doesn't block the built-in dash screen or the vents. A tall order I know. But it looks like these will do the trick:

Magnetic version:
https://smile.amazon.com/Zchan-2021-...2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1

Non-magnetic version:
https://smile.amazon.com/2019-2021-F...xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

I think I am going to give the magnetic one a try. If I do get it, I am going to wrap the mounting bracket in black vinyl so it matches the dash better.

I haven't figured it out yet, my first option will be to tuck the flat cable into the panels to the center console routing it as best as possible without pulling the panels.

Long term, I'll likely install a panel mount usb in the glove box, or in the passenger footwell. I have to pull the panels for the audio install in the next few months. I'll update as I continue to work on it.
