Creaking from carbon roof?
Anyone else experiencing any creaking coming from the rear of the car. I think I have a creaking that's happening where the carbon roof meets the rear glass. I have 500 miles on the car now and intend to bring this up with BMW during my break in service, but thought I'd ask here if anyone heard any creaking in their cars. I should add, it mostly happens when it's really hot in out.
I'm taking my car for tint soon, I really hope BMW doesn't say the tint is what's causing the creaking, even though it's creaking even before tints. |

Does the creaking happen while driving? if so it could be the weather stripping on the trunk. Happens a lot on the g20 and also happened to me on mine. Some silicon spray on the weather stripping will take care of that.

F80 would creak in rear window weather stripping. Roll down the windows slightly and if it stops, it is probably the weather stripping. There are lots of fixes for this if in fact that is the problem.

Its not the roof creaking. It is the weather sealing around the windows/doors. I think it is something like 3 generations have had this. My first and second F80s had it but the first to a lesser extent than the second.
For some reason this doesnt seem to affect the F82 or F87 (and likely the G82) probably due to the frameless setup of the windows.

Bumping this.
My roof creeks after being parked in the sun. I hear mine once I get moving. Windows up or down dont matter. It still creeks. I also hear it when I come to a stop at a red light. When I go to work in the morning (garaged), I dont hear any creaking at all.

My G80 roof creaks. I always think the rear windows are open, or things are clanking around. Car is garage kept if that matters.
It sounds like the CF, or body is expanding due to warmer weather here in NJ FYI. I only have 1400 miles. Last edited by Laguna01///M3; 05-18-2022 at 07:41 AM.. |

I do feel like it's the roof expanding due to heat.

My dually roof creaks all the time when parked in the hot sun then driven off with A/C on full blast. Been doing it for years. Haven’t noticed it yet on the G80, but won’t surprise me.

I lubed all my rubbers with gummy pledge and I still hear creaking when my car is parked outside for a hour or more. I'm convinced its my roof expanding and settling once I get moving.
On another note. My first G80 roof had a reaction from gtek ceramic coating. An authorized BMW body shop general manager (40yrs with BMW) said the roof on the G80 is not like any of the former M cars carbon. Its made differently than the ones in the past. So that might explain why I never heard any of my past 6 M cars with carbon roof creak.

I'd like to know too!
So is the recommendation to PPF the carbon roof instead of ceramic coat?

Same issue on my wife's Lexus RX around the rear hatch. Some Blaster Silicone Spray on all the seals and it rides super quiet now.

My first F80 really suffered from this from the rear door weather strip in the Hofmeister kink area, but it was temperature dependent. I thought it was a rattle and then the dealer put PTFE tape on the shut face and pretty much cured it. My second F80 had a mild case which I could mitigate by just cleaning the shut face. Since new (now 12k miles ago!), my G80 has had an intermittent rattle from what I thought was the passenger side of the instrument panel. I told the service manager at the dealer (who I have a very good relationship with) not to chase it as the last thing I wanted them to do was start taking the panel apart... You reminded me to have a go at the passenger door weather strip as this noise is temperature dependent too. Thanks!

It turned my roof lines white along the thick top coat of resin or whatever it's made out of. But only in direct sun! At night time it was normal black looking. It was very strange. I had it checked by two other well known ceramic coating shops, plus the bmw body shop. All three confirmed this was not buffer burn (no buffer was used anyhow). It was not "build up" of excess ceramic coating. And that my roof was not delaminating or defective. It was either a chemical reaction the coating sealed in. Or it was just how the ceramic coating reflected the light. You can see it around my antenna too.
