The thing is the chipset does a lot more than run the UI. That is a fraction of the processing power. The more advanced assisted driving functions require the bigger chipset. What is mystery to me is why the X5 M60i has ID 8.5 but proper X5 M does not. It $30k more and has deficient systems. Personally living in the most trafficked and congested part of the country I love all those assistance systems. On the open road turn it off. Went up the West Side Highway from 50th street to 96th street last week its 2 & miles took 20 mins or half an hour, maybe - I never touched the wheel or either pedal. Munching away on my snacks all the while.

Need the ID 8.5 chipset for the Highway Assistant. Though its not offered upfront on the LCI its not out of the realm of possibility that BMW could offer it down the road via subscription. I, for one, would pay extra for it after the fact. The more advanced assist cost more upfront anyway but again I would pay to upgrade if they were to develop it for this platform.
