Wheel and tire protection plan - worth it?

Hey all, question about a wheel and tire protection plan the dealer is trying to sell me. About to take delivery of my '23 M3 Comp xDrive tomorrow. They're suggesting this protection plan, about $3100 for 5 years. They mentioned replacing a damaged wheel is about $2k. I'm pretty careful about parking so curb rash shouldn't come up. Potholes maybe. So maybe I replace 1 or 2 tires over 5 years due to damage, and maybe 1 wheel. So is their plan worth it? I work for Michelin, so I do get a discount on tires

Thanks,

Chuck

Short answer: No

Long answer: Only insure what you can’t afford to lose - life, health, liability, home and autos. Everything else self insure. Sure every 1 in 10 will benefit from the policy and that’s the story the dealers will tell you. The odds are with the house not the player.

Totally not worth it, especially if you get tires for cheap. $2k per wheel is insane--there are quite a few great SETS of wheels you can get for that kind of money. I just bought a brand-new set of OE M4 CSL wheels for just over $2600 delivered.

The prices on these plans have increased so much, it isn't worth it. I think I did have it about 10 years ago but it was much cheaper.

I have always gotten the tire and wheel protection for my BMWs and it has always worked out for me.
It covers Wheels, tires if you get a nail or other object in them.
Mine also cover dents that you might get on your car.
I guess its not for everyone but it has always worked out for me.I basically always get my moneys worth out of it.

I got the insurance and it’s definitely been worth it to me. I believe it depends on how often you drive and where you drive. My M4 is my daily and I commute from NJ to NYC everyday. At 11k miles I’ve replaced both the driver side and passenger side front tires AND a wheel for the front driver side. Potholes/nails are my worst enemy.

I was contemplating it but I actually ended up going with the wheel and tire insurance from AAA (you have to be a member), it was $1500 cheaper than BMW’s wheel and tire, but includes paintless dent repair and key replacement. If I got all this from my dealer, it would cost me $5500. I ended up going for the 84 month coverage and it was around $1750 + taxes. I haven’t filed a claim yet because I got my car two weeks ago, but seems easy enough, you can go anywhere including BMW dealerships (as long as they accept the insurance because they have to get a pre-authorization to do the work). For the price and the area I live in NYC, I thought it was worth a try.

Yes.

My wife went through 5 tires last summer due to pothole damage. Well, 4 bubbles and 1 nail. Front passenger was replaced 3 times.

When I take delivery of my M4 it’ll be optioned.

I’ve had it for my previous two M3s and for my wife’s X3. I have a propensity for nails in my tires. I average about 2-3 tire replacements per year. At 500 bucks a tire, that’s about 3k for three years and package is less than that from what I recall.

This time around for my upcoming 23 g80 I may opt out. If 3 yr warranty is more than 3 k no way.

Unless you have runflats or puncture is in unrepairable area why would you replace the tire? Repair it. I do it myself in under 20 min for free. $500 for every nail is crazy.

It’s worth it. I don’t know what planet these people are living on but tires are expensive. Very expensive to replace 2-3 tires and with warranty it’ll easily cover your costs here in Canada. It was around 2k for me but it will definitely pay it self over my lease term.

I'm sure after a year the rest of the posters would have figured this out.

On my X3M, I took one for the team and got the dealer-backed wheel ding package. For curb rash, they polish it out. It does make it nearly disappear. BUT... you can't just drop off a wheel or two, or sit and wait for a few hours while they fix the wheels: you have to leave the car for 2 to 4 days. Big hassle to do this every year.

For my G80, I'm resolved to not buy anything else. No warranties, no ding packages, nothin.

I had this same question when I picked up my G8X. You’re definitely going to hear both perspectives. I went back and forth and decided to go with it. I paid $2000 for 5 years. I know there’s no guarantee I’ll use it and everyone saying a lot of wheels you can get for that. I intend to at least make sure I get a new full set of tires before it ends. So I’ll get close to the value. Like anything you never REALLY know if you will use it. If you drive this daily and put decent miles annually maybe it’s worth it. I’m 50/50 on it still. Good luck!

The only plan that is worth it in my opinion is the maintenance plan which covers all services (even brake replacements). I got a great deal on mine and took it, definitely worth it but everything else just seems unnecessary. $2k a wheel is a bit ridiculous, you can easily find the oem wheels (used) selling for that much in a set

It pains me that the default state of mind of most people is to resort to name calling and not "damn didn't see the date, sorry about that" in an effort to pay attention next time.

My wife has owned her X5 for just under two years and she optioned it with the 22” wheels. In that time she has had 3 tires replaced and 2 wheels fixed due to road hazard. The plan has already paid for itself. But we live in New Englang where the pot holes run rampant.

The wheel and tire warranty was $750 for 3 years when I purchased my f80 in 2017. I used it quite a bit because of the house building in my neighborhood. I can spot nails like an English Setter, but nails always seem to find me
