I found the Kia design overwhelming and super busy. The two pics are a great comparison though.

I cannot predict how much I will be bothered by the new vs. old dash layout until some months of true use. It is a moot point, since we cannot opt out of it, unless you buy the 2 door versions of the car.

To the OP, the detailed video was super helpful including some of the comments, especially in regards to the software and chip differences, which has me also a bit concerned or puzzled.

What the new layout removed, it's not only the climate control buttons but all the shortcuts which I used a lot to avoid going into sub menus and do quick switch in displayed data... While I don't adjust climate control that often in real life, i actually used the hardware configurable shortcuts button way more... I'll miss those a lot...

Sure ID8 is a step up in graphic looks, I'm a techie so I don't have anything against screens or new tech, but i prefer when it add a benefit over the previous setup and unfortunately it doesn't do that in raw functionality, only in presentation which again is arguable.

Likely SP18 since its still the same G80 generation (same for the G20 series), I don't believe LCIs are getting the upgrade, only new generations (I wonder if the new 7 series has SP21?), but I don't know what way to figure that out.

The i4 has SP18 vs the iX's SP21 since the i4 derives from the normal 4 series. One way you can tell is the drive recorder, where the iX can do +- 40 second recordings vs the i4's +- 20 second, but I don't know if OP has it (or even if the G80s have it?)

Edit: Augmented Reality navigation view is also an iX SP21 (MGU21) exclusive thing, OP can maybe try that. For reference:
MY23 drive recorder is +-20 seconds.

That's a great display and I can see why they did it from an engineering perspective, however, deletion of certain dedicated buttons (such as heated seats, heat/AC controls, etc.) would be annoying. Kind of like getting rid of the CD player, it saves BMW money by having fewer parts and less complicated manufacturing. Now how about an option to revert the tach and speedo back to the easy to read round display that we are used to?

The writer seems to be the problem. Maybe he's just too dim to operate it.

I test drove an iX, it was very easy to use; I didn't even need any instructions, and I'm not exactly a genius.

I think the display is outstanding

They 100% could not afford to change the dash to make it perfect

I'm taking bets

This will be updated by 2024

That corner just sticks out

thought it would blend in at night.

Not a deal breaker at all and I'd still buy the car 100%.

They could of done better with that corner against the back drop
This is a cost cutting move.

Wait so there is no button to push to turn on heated seats? No buttons for climate control? So basically this BS is for warm climate people only huh, you expect people in winter with gloves on to be able navigate this iPad crap? Wow

Heated steering wheel is a physical button. Also comes with remote start. Set your profile up warm the car up and boom no need for gloves. Always a solution to the problem.

Lol do you know how long it would take for a car to start blowing warm air in -40c at idle after sitting for hours? Not saying people who buy these cars will daily in dead ass Canadian winters but this tech will likely trickle down to the rest of the fleet as standard equipment.
I dunno all this tech stuff seems like a huge hassle and completely unnecessary.

I was expecting shortcut buttons on the screen, like a pull down menu at least. Basically giving us the same functionality, not that hard to integrate it! I have also used / use the shortcut buttons on every BMW. That's the biggest concern I have. I attended the BMW Ultimate drive that featured the i4 and the screen itself is amazing. I also drove the iX and I didn't feel that the screen is a distraction, plus I rely a lot on HUD anyways.

Shortcut buttons have been relocated to the "top tray" on ID8. Push the iDrive Controller up until they show up.

So if that's the case, how is a physical button better if you have to go out in that weather to press it? I'd rather have the ability to start the car automatically activate the heated seats and such from the warm confines of my home.

Whoever hating on the id8 screen doesn't have one or havent had it long enough. It takes time to get used to it but the technology and quality of the screen is amazing imo.
