I don’t reckon you can really feel it at any time, it’s so seamless and in the background.

It feels RWD, and from my understanding most of the time it kind of is, but in the right circumstances (like inclement weather) it will definitely be more sure footed.

There really isn’t a downside to having xDrive, so I’d suggest going for it. If you want carbon stuff you can easily do it later.

Thanks!

Yeah it seems like the consensus is getting the X-Drive now since you're able to get the carbon fiber parts afterwards.

Just so you’re aware, $4,700 for the CF exterior package is a really good deal. When you look at the price of the MP CF pieces individually, it’s about $12k:

Inlets: $3,500
Spoiler: $1,000
Diffuser: $5,000
Mirror caps: $2,300

And that’s without installation of the parts.

You’d feel it less at higher speeds. It’s the low speed traction you get that provides better acceleration.

You can’t feel the difference. You just feel traction. And not much squirm accelerating hard. The RWD is composed, for sure, but more lively when you juice it.

Xdrive in these cars is so rear biased the front wheels don't really activate much unless it's needed. This isn't an understeering Audi mess from 10 years ago. It's not that big of a deal.

This is only if you insist on buying OEM. You can get all of that for substantially less and get like 98% of the quality.

I've had my RWD M3 competition for two years now and still don't regret my purchase. I'm not a stoplight racer and not chasing 8 or 9 seconds 0 to 60. I don't track my car either but I love finding a good B road and it's very composed. Also I didn't get the carbon fiber and my cars MSRP was 79,795. Of course I'm not getting rid of my car anytime soon so resale is irrelevant and the only regret I have is not getting full leather. Also I've taken time over the last two years to learn my car and still don't feel the need to have AWD. Also I drive my car year round on summer tires and live in Virginia and owned multiple sports cars and not switched tires.

Yes, you can totally go a cheaper route. Personally I prefer to go the OEM route. The BMW carbon pieces are almost always flawless , perfect weave, and exact fitment. I’ve had BMW warranty CF pieces before. It’s also nice that everything is installed perfectly.

On past cars I’ve tried a lot of different brand like RKP, 3D, Mode, Auto Technic, etc. I still prefer the M Performance parts. Not to mention if you go all high end aftermarket brands for all of the pieces, you’re gonna spend right around what the CF package costs on a new build. If you get it on the window sticker, it will benefit you when you eventually sell your car.

Both are priced similar. You can only choose 1.
There's a lot of good advice here, but I'll echo that xDrive is probably the way to go since it can't be added later. It helps traction off the line and out of turns. At worst, you won't regret having xDrive.

A car is such a losing investment that I don't factor in whether options affect resale.

I'd also like to echo that when you're buying a car like this, you shouldn't be compromising. Go build one on BMWUSA's site and see what you like best - at the very least, familiarize yourself with what it can come with. There's nothing worse than buying off the lot and then realizing "oh wait, it could have had that option?"

xDrive = can’t add later…
carbon = anyone can DIY, and at lower $

There’s my answer.
