I've driven the 840i, M850i and M8. Of the three, I'd take the 850 unless money is no object, and then it's a no-brainer.
However, I'm one of those old farts who quickly tires of a loud exhaust and looks for that button to turn it down. Just like there's nothing like the rumble of a V8, also there is nothing like the shriek of an inline 6. At low RPMs, the V8 wins hands-down. At high RPMs, give me the 6. For me, the compromise that BMW made in the G8x platform is nearly perfect - I can close the valves at will and make it whisper quiet (relatively speaking) or I can open them up and hear it scream. Could it be louder? Oh yeah, fer sure. I've had cars like that, and it gets old really quick. Think 5 hour road trip. Money no object, if I had to pick between the 8 and the 4, I'd still pick the 4. It's actually more comfortable, a wider range of adjustments for the suspension, handles better, weighs less, and looks nearly as good on the outside. The 8 interior with full leather is a step up, for sure, but the 4 is still nothing to sneeze at. And I save, what, $50K? Because money is still an issue for most of us. Otherwise, we'd be on the McLaren forum.

There is literally NOTHING exciting about the M850, absolutely nothing. I've driven one for 3 days as a loaner. No one is ever gonna point and say "hey Chris! Check out that M850!"
The M3 is incredible.

Even those who know nothing about cars have always said they prefer V8 cars. My brother, who couldn't give 2 shits about cars. Don't care for styling, speed, performance, HP or anything like that, says the best car i ever bought was my C7Z. And i agree with him lol. Cold start on my car is insane. Love GM for putting together such an amazing machine. Can't wait to get the C8Z too. |

The video someone posted in this thread with the aftermarket IOMG M3 sounded ok, but it sounds like a 350Z, which is a V6. And there is nothing more annoying of a 6 cyl sound, than a freaking 350Z LOL |

weird seeing people mention how "great" bmw v8's are. I have first hand experience that bmw V8's are actually garbage and require 5x the maintenance than their I6 engines.

Domestic V8s for example, from GM and Ford (I don't know much about Chrysler) are generally bullet-proof reliable. And sound great.

Yeah i was talking V8's in general. And yes GM small block V8's are essentially indestructible. That's why people "LS everything" lol V8's are the best haha |

I loved the torque my V8 7 series had and when I went on trips to WV to pick my daughter up, I loved the way it handled in the mountains. I will say I still prefer the I6 my X5 has and prefer it more now. As far as maintenance for the V8, I owned five of them and it won't cheap and long term I would not own one again. My 7 cost me about 4k to maintain last year and I sold it.

Also they "LS everything" because you can buy them as crate engines or pull them out of 9 trillion wrecked cars more easily than you can grab many other V8 engines. The somewhat, oh what's the word, traditional nature of the engines make them easy transplants without too many packaging and electronics issues as well, I'd think.

They're simple. They're affordable. They're reliable. They have incredible aftermarket. They're a powerhouse stock. They get good MPG. They're torque monsters. They're easily attainable. They sound amazing. They fit virtually in any car with essentially no modifications. It's a no brainer on why people do them. I think the only reason why someone wouldn't want to do it even though they have all the access and/or money to do it, is because they want to try something different and not copy what everyone else is doing. Otherwise everyone will be driving an LS based car. |

The best part is I am in this thing for around 10k, it makes 385hp reliably, parts are dirt cheap, and it gets about 22mpg. Sorry for the derailer! |
