Just to show that these comparison to the 911 aren't new.
2009 M3 vs 911 Carrera Car and Driver 2015 M4 vs 911 Carrera Car and Driver I actually find it flattering that the two are compared and for the M3/4 to finish on top .

The 992 was .4 quicker to 60, but only .2 in the 1/4. 4th, 5th and 6th gear 60 punches: in 4th and 5th, the M4 left it for dead--and this was the S. In 6th, low rpm obviously, it steadily walked away from the Porsche. German mag (in German, actually), no ax to grind. The rear engine gave it the jump; by 100 or so, the advantage started shrinking. Punches? M4 clear winner. It will leave a non-S in the weeds from the start. To say it doesn't match up very well with a Porsche--which would have stickered for at least $130k--or ~ $50k over what mine cost, is simply incorrect. The same result would happen against a C8. As to their only knock--the grill, if BMW came out with it first, it would be offsetting. But Lexus has had them for years--and look far worse, now down market to Toyotas. So has Audi, although theirs is much better looing than Lexus. Personally, I liked it from the start, and like it more every time I look at it. |

I think automotive journalism is dead. With the influx of youtubers calling themselves "reviewers", it has really diluted the essence of what automotive journalism used to be. To not piss manufactures off (cut the hand off that feeds you), I think review these days are extremely subjective based on ad dollars etc. There are a few that still don't give a fuk like Chris Harris when he was banned from testing Ferrari because he gave an honest review. I don't trust most reviews I read these days. I will do my own test drive.

Trying to hustle a 3,800 lb car around a track like LRP was not likely to produce an adjective like “fun” from auto journalists. I love LRP and have raced there many times but it’s a very short, tight track, and would not have played to this car’s biggest strength:being an enormously competent and quick everyday driver with a MT. So, I think the review kinda misses the point. And I think most track day drivers will find their G80/83s to be enormously fun, so long as they don’t expect it to turn laps like a Cayman GTS. In my book the F80 was better looking but since I can’t lease a new one, a G80 M3 is compelling, even with the less attractive packaging.

I think being competent at lapping road tracks (while still being a tolerable daily driver) is exactly what the M3 product promise is. Otherwise it's competing with fast straight line GT cars like the Dodge Charger V8 or something and that's not what an M3 is to me.
If an M3 is truly not fun to do a track day in then it has lost its way. |

I like cars and I enjoy reading car reviews. I reach my own conclusions, based on my personal preferences and use case, but reviews help inform things I may pay particular attention to during my test drives.
The universal anointing of the M2cs is a pretty good indicator of what a lot of automotive journalist gravitate to. That said, most of the G80 reviews I've read have been very good. Even those that have offered some criticism : Chris Harris, Matt Farrah, R&T, etc., have also remarked on several good points. The consensus at R&T is that the car is VERY capable, but not as fun as they had hoped - primarily due to the cars size. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone because the car is, in fact, large. And BMW suspects the majority of potential buyers want it that way (besides,it would be redundant to size the G80 @ M2 dimensions). Based on everything I've read, the G80 sounds like an outstanding daily; I wouldn't get bent out of shape if a reviewer is disappointed with its weekend fun car chops. In fact, I doubt the G80 would be at the top of hardly anyone's weekend fun car/second car list. Those looking for a sporty daily, however, are definitely going to short list the G80. |

Here’s where Doug DeMuro ranks the G80 M3. Higher than the M2 Competition and even the F80 M3 CS (on the basis of the M3 being a better daily driver). Strong competition. I wish other bloggers and magazines would do broad comparisons like this. The best data-based comparisons are the DougScore, C&D’a Lightning Lap, TFL’s Ike Gauntlet (for tow vehicles) and I guess Consumer Reports.

Tied with M2C on that list for fun factor.
It's subjective; just get behind the wheel and take it around your favorite turns at speed if you can. You'll know right away what the G80 brings to the table. |

YouTubers get paid a portion of ad revenue from content served by Google's ad network, which is targeted based on the viewer. C&D and R&T and MotorTrend sell advertising space directly to brands and get paid directly. Now tell me which one is more likely to be influenced by auto manufacturers??
