Ahhh they took off Thick Whips G80 Manual review. Dealer let him drive it around and he reviewed it . He said it felt numb and would just get the Auto Competition over the 6 speed due to all the electronics and numb feel. Hmmmm

Plenty of threads discussing this, but the main intro thread should suffice: https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1759748

Biggest difference, obviously is 6MT only for base, 8AT only for Comp. Big jump in torque from base to comp, from 406 to 479.
I know the technical stuff, im talking about LOOKS wise

BMW is genius - the slow tease - reminds me of Meatloafs "Paradise by the dashboard lights".

Bimmerpost should change the misleading description of this thread on the front page of the website.

I enjoyed the review, and the exhaust note surprisingly! Thank you!

I think he refers to the power delivery although he could have clarified that. S58 is fairly linear with not much down low but a lot up high. Contrast that with S55 which was arguably too much down low and slight taper off up high. Otherwise there is virtually nothing comparable with E46 M3.

I wouldn't say it's perfectly linear power but more like if the S65 had more power with VTEC (yo!) that kicks in at 3k RPMs and carries to redline.
The S65 did have a version of VTEC, it's called double-VANOS

Anyone who watched the video what was meant by 'return to form?' Meaning did it get lost between the F8X and G8X?

The OP is the reviewer and can explain better but as an observer I understood it as that the G8X is returning to the more surgical character of the cars before the F8X. More linear and predictable power delivery and steering with a more settled chassis.

Yes, definitely less visceral and raw than the F8X. More smooth, in both power delivery and the way the car goes down the road. Where an F8X always felt on a knife edge to me with the way the torque was delivered, I feel like the G82 I drove, at least in base form, was much more linear. The steering is also more reactive off center and sharper. The car feels much more planted than the F8X does - that may be due to the wider tires and revised damping (the car rides far better and is less crashy).

The one thing I will say is that the F8X feels more.....on its toes than the G82 did. But I was extremely impressed and loved my time in it.

Seems like a bad PR move on their part though. If you can't get cars out to journalists before deliveries to dealerships, that's their problem. If they want to control the narrative, they should be on top of it.

Agreed-- I'm sure the press reviews occured months ago (I can always check my press source), but a moot point to have the press global embargo expire days prior to customer market launch and wild west dealerships ignoring said instructions of no test drives. Should of held the G80/G82's at the VPC's, but it would have been a logistical nightmare to store for cars weeks and then rush transport to dealerships. BMW didn't think this through that they could control the dealerships.

Similar feeling when I drove an M3 comp. fast all around and mostly linear delivery but not sure that is what I want in a car. I am sure I would happy in a G80 but nothing about it is making me have to have it like the F80 did.

FWIW, a C63 is about 4000 lbs.....so right in line with the G8X, only heavier. A 2021 Audi S4 is about 3900 lbs. as well.

So? S4 is not a competitor of a C63 or an M3 and hasn't been for a long time.

i think Sedan_Clan 's point is that all the immediate competitors are already at G8X weight .. a RS5 coupe weights over 1800kg and sportback a bit on top that

and this is all the current gen cars which are about to be replaced by heavier PHEV models

Exactly! I would've thought my post was somewhat self explanatory, but thank you for clarifying for me.
