Car & Driver Instrumented Test Results For G82 M4 base

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
C&D tested the G82 manual in the latest issue, here's a screenshot of the test results below. I've been waiting to see what kind of numbers the manual can do using real testing equipment. Overall a positive review based on the performance and daily drivability.

Update: the article was just posted, find it here:

This seems to be following the common theme for these reviews:
1. Design is iffy
2. Everything else is stellar

This one has the added sprinkles of "why won't they offer me less customization" but that's basically irrelevant to those who like that kind of thing.

Slower than the X3M to both 100 and through the 1/4 mile. I know more power and AWD but that's surprising given the weight differences.

The review is okay but Quiroga spends a few paragraphs whining about too many vehicle settings, pining for the days when an M car came with a single suspension and steering setting. I'm starting to get really tired of reviewers that spend a good portion of the review reminiscing about the old days as that's not what I'm reading the review for. You don't see cell phone reviewers pining for the simplicity of old rotary dial telephones and it's such a shame that automobile journalists lack a degree of professionalism to review the product as-is and if they don't like all the settings on today's car to make a separate column about it.

Not really as this was a manual transmission version and he makes mention the weather was terrible during the review.

Exactly.

We can argue looks and intangibles until the cows come home, but by objective measures the G80 is a fantastic successor to the F80.

Any elaboration on "terrible weather"? Actively raining or just not quite warm enough for performance tests?

Comparing the C&D G82 results to the F82, despite the top end advantages the 5-60 time is similar and top gear acceleration is actually worse in the G82. This must be a function of the larger turbos and tuning of the S58 compared to S55.

Exactly. Lower compression ratio and bigger turbos will yield a higher boost threshold and potentially more lag. It is known that the S58 has less bottom end than the S55, but I find it can give a character more reminiscent to traditional ///M cars.

Well the settings are part of the car, so it makes sense he talks about it in the review... of the car.

Yep, similar to M motors of old. Still, I will put money on the tune and motor itself evolving mid generation for more low end grunt given how favoured it is by the average buyer these days.

I somewhat get being annoyed by individual settings though. Now that we can modify so much, and that so many parts are ECU integrated, having simple factory preset modes is always appreciated.

As echoed, impressive for RWD manual on wet surface, like that weight figure too.

It trapped 2 mph faster....and it was a manual, underpowered version, rwd only(traction limited) and bad weather.

The awd Comp will be much much faster than the x3m. It's 600lbs lighter.

I mean, this

They're reviewing a car in 2021 and whining about configurable drive modes? I mean, damn guys, the last M3 that didn't have that was the E46 M3 that stopped production in 2006? That is a long time ago!!

Cars should be reviewed against their contemporary competition. Who gives a crap than when dinosaurs roamed the earth there was a car that weight 2k lb?

Also, having to read long paragraphs where I have to hear someone's opinion about something's aesthetics is annoying. I don't give a crap what they think of the car's looks. I will make up my own mind about it.

The fact that it trapped 2 mph faster is the key. Once up to a speed where traction becomes less of an issue for forward propulsion the manual G80/82 should be quicker around a track or on the highway than a X3M.

I don't think you can separate completely looks and machine. Appreciate that looks are subjective and you may be in the minority that wants to read only about the machine. But reviewers have to cater to the "average" online or print readers.

Personally, the G8X could have Bugatti performance but I could not pull the trigger based on looks.

Also a lot of stuff is set it and forget it. So even if you feel there are too many options, it's only a problem once. Probably more annoying when you get to drive new cars for free constantly, but that is not relevant to consumers.
