Chill out. The E46 M3 was being compared to the WRX STI and the Civic Type R of its generation.

I cross shopped an M2 with a Type R Civic and an M3. Also looked at Supra.

If Toyota brought over a GR Yaris I'd absolutely take that over an M3.

Buyers who like sporty cars will appreciate any of these offerings from other manufacturers and wouldn't be relegated to badge snobbery based on a perceived elitist superiority (not saying that's what you were doing).

But I do think plenty of people will dismiss a car out of hand bc of the badge. Lots of other factors go into a car purchase for some people.

You won't understand the Type R until you drive one on a back road. One of the best drivers cars available at any price right now and is also shockingly useable day to day.

I do understand why people will get hung up on price and RWD vs FWD at first glance though. The fact that used CTR prices are close to retail prices for two year old cars says a lot about how in demand they are and how well they drive.

+1

It's the detractors with extremely short memories that forget the comparisons are cyclical.

Im not dismissing either cars mentioned, civic type r is an awesome package for the money, and I love Mercedes, just dont see these 2 cars in the same category, I like all brands, again, different category of cars

The video isn't a direct comparison, but shows how much faster a lap time you get when spending X more on the A45 and M3 over the Civic.

Once you mentioned your affinity for the GR Yaris all of your design evaluation credibility went out the window.

If I were in my 20s I'd totally rock a Type R. I love its unapologetic looks and the drive exp is awesome.

I'm cool with that.

They are objectively ugly or "less attractive" when compared with cars produced by their respective design departments in years past.

Yaris isn't a looker either. It should definitely be in this comparison, and would most likely spank the other three cars (in driver engagement and fun).
