Someone is STILL planning to steal my M3!!!

SO The plot thickens! My original thread I posted a few weeks ago mysteriously disappeared as if it never existed. I am sure most of you remember it.

Any idea how it disappeared? Anyway...

Wow... That's some scumbag crap. I wouldn't be surprised if the BMW dealership(s) has a person or two assisting with these attempted robberies. Keep us posted, at least you're heading in the right direction to have law enforcement track these guys down.

Wow. I would guess that they are planning on stealing it from somewhere less likely to have cameras, and this was the test to make sure the key worked.

Can BMW rekey the car? Is there anything they can do to make the ill-gotten key not work?

Edit - If your previous thread was deleted, it was probably due to how deep into "not car-related" discussions it had fallen. Much of what ended up in that thread belonged in Off Topic, not in a thread in the normal sections. Not the first time that's happened.

Yes. They can "reset" the car and then have it learn the new keys.

Reminds me of a news story here locally, a poor woman was robbed in her apartment parking lot, they got her purse with wallet and keys.

Three months later the thieves returned and stole her (Honda) car. Because they had the fob.

Of course, I'm watching this on TeeVee like some old crazy guy screaming at the screen, "why didn't you have the dealer remove the key from the car's memory?" I mean, come on people!

As for the OP, yes, I'm a little confused because I thought in order to make a new fob work, they had to program it with all existing/known fobs (or at least one!) for the car to learn the new one.

I suppose that these days with the OTA updates and all, they could do it remotely, although that seems odd to me. Surely though, regardless of how it was done, they can reprogram the car to forget all but the real, authorized fobs owned by the real owner.

It's totally unfair, as he'll have to make an appointment, pay for the service, and no one is going to reimburse him for that. The only upside is that the potential thief wasted all of that money buying a new fob (which ain't cheap).

If nothing else, this should be a reminder to everyone to keep your insurance up-to-date and paid for. I work for an insurance company, and it's staggering (to me) how many people let their insurance lapse and then try to file a claim.

Makes sense about the previous thread being deleted. It became a political discussion. My intention was to bring awareness to this issue.
This is really some gone in 60 seconds shit. I can only wonder how many cars have been stolen using this method.

Did the would-be thieves actually acquire the new fob? Or did they merely order it? Crazy.

They sure did. Here is the time line - I swear i should've been a cop this shit is easy

1. Sunday 5:45 AM - Scumbag walks on my property takes pic of my plate. Thought no one saw him - Moron

Goes on carvana or some other site and enters plate # and obtains vin

2. Monday Morning- Scumbag #1 calls his boy at BMW service and provides vin#
Sumbag #2 provides full home address, and full name via
service records to scumbag #1 who then goes to town on photoshop.

3. Monday afternoon - someone enters BMW dealer as if its me, presents a fake license and fake registration to probably the one who is in on it (likely someone in Parts) Accepts payment and orders key.

4. Wednesday - key arrives at dealer

5. Thursday - 4:45 AM - https://video.nest.com/clip/b57715f0...cf428e09c7cc46

Look at the disappointment on my man. He thought he was going to drive an M3 that night.

Anyone remember the old tv show Bait Car? They would rig up a “likely to be stolen” car with auto shutoff, locking doors, etc and trap the bad guy in the act.

We need THAT again.

I hope cops are involved at this point and your properties are safe. People involved especially the insider should be punished as this might not be the first time they do it.

Keep us updated on the progress and hope this thread stays on track.

I dont like that they can STILL drive it. I dont care how slow the car goes. If they really want to they can have flatbed waiting around the corner. This car if stolen will go straight to a container for shipping out of newark and will be off the streets and untrackable in less than 15 minutes.

OP said he was going to park the m3 in his garage which is probably what they saw, or didn’t see lol. His car outside of the garage.

I think that last video was them doing the final appearance and just taking the car with the key fob they have, only to find out the car is in the garage.

The crappy part though is, now op can never drive it and leave it unattended. Can’t go to the movies, Walmart, school or work and leave it because it’ll be gone.

This really sucks I’m sorry OP.
