I went through a similar situation when I moved to Germany for work. It's exciting but dealing with a car loan can be a real headache. I had my loan through a big company, and they didn't allow exporting the car while it still had an active loan. Sound familiar?

I tried refinancing with my bank, but got declined for the same reason—my income-to-loan ratio wasn't what they wanted. It's frustrating, I know. I found a really useful guide at https://threemovers.com/cost-of-ital...tional-movers/. It gave me great tips for international moves.

I had a similar situation 15 years go with a minivan while on active duty. Ended up selling it and buying a local German spec 5 series. If you can get the financing at a price you can tolerate than go for it. Study the German drivers license book provided by US European Command. It’s was a hard test long ago, due to new signs and certain right of way laws in Germany.

If you can’t take it then BMW Military sales is available for DoD civilians and you can get a good tax free deal, until you bring back stateside and pay the state tax then.

Good luck and enjoy Europe!

I did end up selling the car stateside before coming over - it was a difficult decision, but the right one. Once I got over here and really thought through my options, I inevitable ordered a 2024 M3 through the BMW military sales program here and yes, I saved 10% off MSRP AND got the car tax-free. So in reality, saved about $20k versus buying a new one in the US. I was also able to secure financing through my new credit union here with a very good rate. The rates I was getting for refinancing the previous car were much higher, and honestly I owed more than the new one is costing with the discounts. In the end, I made out just fine and I still have my dream car - only negative was going through the break-in period again so soon lol

As a few others have stated, sell the car before you move. Once you get here to Germany go through Bavarian Motor Cars and buy a new one. You won’t pay tax and they currently have 10% off MSRP.

You can also buy mine

You gonna be in the Ramstein area?
