This is going to be high profile/high dollar work for the dealerships. Almost guaranteed the highest rated techs with the most experience will be performing the swaps. This is not a place where BMW or their dealers are going to skimp.

In many ways the M3/4 define the brand and act as a halo car for much of the line. BMW will want to ensure that continues.

BMW just needs to offer the affected VIN numbers to drop their cars off at the local dealer, have a truck come pick up the affected cars, take them to the airport, and fly them back to the factory. I'll take a rental, from BMW, of course.

Looks like I have the RAM stop sale and main bearing shell recall. The car I ordered is still “At Port”… I will not pay $90k for a car that needs an engine rebuild or replacement before I even drive it… I might pay $80k though.

US site shows no recall but UK shows the dreaded engine recall. Oh well, it is what it is.

Production date: August 3rd

My M3 started production sometime around September 8th and finished around the 27th of September. This is concerning news indeed. The UK website says my car is OK so fingers crossed. Good luck everybody

Is a main bearing repair similar to a rod bearing repair which just requires dropping the oil pan or is it more complicated?

He's probably going to tell you that you dreamt it (in an overly aggressive way of course!)

Someone here might pay more. Care to share your configuration and dealer?

So far looks like I narrowly avoided. F97 with production date of 8/3 and no recalls on both sites.

There is alot of confusion on in this thread.

1. This is not the first year of the S58... it was in the X3M so the comments about how it is bad to buy the first model year don't apply.

2.This is a bad run of a batch during engine production. That is different than a systemic issue of engine architecture which hurts reliability.

This is how mine is, too... On the US and UK sites, my VIN shows no recalls *knock wood* but I went to set up paperless and auto pay this morning and saw the recall warning in my BMWFS page. As you said, it provides no other information. I'm waiting on a SA to call me back to confirm what their system shows.

For those asking, after having spoken to my friend in munich, the "Bearing shell gate" seems to be effectively for those cars produce until september 23rd.

An accurate internal investigation is in progress at BMW ag.

Being in the homepage, this thread has attracted a lot of "typical" G8x trolls.

Their contribution adds no value to the thread and hope we can stick on to the real discussion.

Asked my SA about the recall and he said this is above his pay grade to discuss this with me. That doesn't sit right with me. What's preventing him from openly discussing it? He was able to discuss the RAM and camera stop sale, but not this. Doesn't make sense, unless there is more to this.

Anyone knows how long it takes for the US site to be updated with the recall?

One of the classes I took at Georgia Tech was a seminar on manufacturing, basically a different industry speaker every week. The auto dude had data showing that the peak # of issues is year 1, then year 2, then the last year when the A team is working on the next generation.

That said I bought a new year car because these days the manufacturers are forced to take care of their customers. They have a lot of oversight and legal obligation. My 2013 550i had oil leaks to the point I was eligible for a new engine. For oil leaks that forced me to add a quart of oil 3-4 times a year. I had all 8 injectors replaced ($10K charge) because they came to realize the 10% ethanol in the US was going to be a long term problem.

Anyway I bought this car knowing that it would have issues. If I wanted something bullet proof I would have gotten a Honda. Nothing about this upsets me, because they are taking care of it.

Employees are often told to not say anything and only point to official comms when the screw up is particularly bad and there’s likely to be legal/financial exposure if the wrong thing is accidentally shared (either through a misunderstanding or through disclosure of material internal information).
