No need for the aggression. I am talking about something as I remember it from over 20 years ago so I wouldn't call that spreading BS.

If the issue with the x28i engines wasn't the liner material used, what was it? The attached (see para 2) suggests that my memory is better than yours…

And that E36 was still a fantastic car.

And here's a picture of said car, taken in Austria.
Wrong again. My memory is not an issue here, this was an M60 issue. Perhaps you should Google M60 engine issues to copy and paste more accurately the next time you derail a thread. I know this issue better than most.

Right actually - we both are. The M60 had an issue and so did the M52 (in Europe). Or are you saying I dreamt that my car was in the dealer for a week having the block changed and my friend with the 528i had the same dream?🤔

Date doesn't matter. If your vin didn't show any stop sales, then for now there aren't any.

You wanted to be first. You wanted to be edgy and cool. You bought a first year M car.

Now quit bitching and let the rest of us read this useful thread so we know which MY to buy.

Second model year, just for the record.

In case anyone was wondering what the term "first world problems" means…..

Still waiting for all the S65s to blow up…..still waiting……nope, end of the world has not come and my kids are still alive.

Cheers,

Sounds like it could be a safety issue which would open them up to liability if the motor goes while driving and causes an accident.

With that in mind, it will be pretty easy to just hand the keys back to BMW in California under the potential of a lemon law enforcement. Any car out of service for 30 days (in the first 18 months) gives the owner the option of a return for full refund including sales tax, interest, etc minus a deduction for mileage. A lot of states have a variation of this as well.

Once the VIN list is posted for the US it should make the decision process pretty easy for most owners. My gut is that BMW will make some decent offers to ensure that some people decide to keep their cars after the fix. Longer warranties, loaner cars, etc. As an example the 2014-15 GT3's are actually sought after because of the 10 year warranties that Porsche provided after the motor recall.

BTW just checked the production date on my '22 and it is 6/30/21 so I fall outside the affected dates
How do you check your production date, down to the exact day.

i'd be okay with BMW giving me a new order with some added bonuses of course. Not like they couldn't resell my car for $110k plus

How have they not figured out their problems.
It seems that many brands have their "thing" as they get caught by a bad batch of parts being applied in a new way.

For example, Audi 2.0TFSI engines suffer from bad oul consumption due to bad oil rings in the cylinders. Audi has not addressed the issue between 2009 and 2016 B8/B8.5 generation.
The solution is much like this one: rebuild/replace engine.

And we also know all the timing chain tensioner saga between VAG group brand and Mini and N20/N26 in the BMW. Probably a 50 cent part causing all the grief.

You know, you're right (bet you didn't see that coming )

I shouldn't have said dumb because that's insulting and not taking into account that different people do in fact have different risk tolerance. Sincerest apologies for that.

What I should have said is, I disagree. As has been pointed out, this issue seems to be affecting '22 models not '21, so it's not the first model year and waiting for the second model year is in fact worse.

This is an S58 engine issue and the engine has been around for more than a few years and also isn't new. Since it appears to be engine specific and looking at the affected vehicles it's not even an issue specific to the G80.

My personal experience has not supported new model years to be a problem. I typically buy early in the lifecycle of a car because I don't like old technology. This was the earliest I was able to by an M3 and I got it. Like I said in my previous reply in this thread, I got burned hard by a LCI, that by all accounts should have been relatively trouble free and not leave me looking like an idiot while stuck at a traffic light with a $75K car that wouldn't start.

The Kia driver that stopped to ask if I needed help was quite nice and sympathetic.
Lmaof!!!!!!!!!!!

He had his moment 🤣😆😂

I think the big issue is the lack of QC for bearings on an engine that's been in production since MY2020 (F97/F98). What's concerning is that there could be another defective batch of bearings later on at any time on any vehicle unless QC gets taken to the level it needs to be at.

With all the attention the G80 is getting, BMW will make it right.

I've seen on one of the x3 forums that there was stop sale on 2020 X3 m sports (f97) due to con rod bearing issues. Although it is a different issue than with the g80's now, the solution was replacing the engine according to the bulletin.
If engine replacement is the solution I don't mind taking delivery of my g80. What you guys think? Also, How long do you guys think this will take?

Oh boy, this sucks for anyone affected. I mean, I can't even trust the dealership to replace a piece of interior trim under warranty without screwing something up and damaging something else in the process (which they recently dutifully did, true to form). I can't begin to imagine putting my trust in the hands of such folks for something like this...
