Winter tires
Anyone know what size rims/tires recommended.
I have an old set of 285/35 square set up for my x5m. The fronts on the m5 are 275/35. Anyone know of the 285/35 all square would fit? Thanks |

So if I do the equivalent of front tires all around, does that mean I need to add spacers on the back wheels or it will look pushed in as they are narrower tires?

Yes. Your rear wheels will be tucked in about an inch compared to the fronts as the standard rear wheels are 10.5 inches. You will need a stud kit and spacers of about 20-25 mm to get them back out to regular oem look.

They're summer performance tires, not designed for winter driving. Once the temperatures get below 40 degrees they'll turn into bricks (think hockey puck on ice). An forget about any traction in the snow.

Anyone planning to still keep the summer performance tires during winter? I'm in DC area and we get some cold below freezing days and 1-2 snow storms (which I normally don't drive in)
I've never changed tires in the winter for any of my cars in the past. |

I would never drive on a 1/4 inch of snow with summer tires on. They just won't get traction any incline will basically take you for a ride you wont enjoy.

Don't forget braking. If you need to do an emergency stop in the winter on all seasons, you have substantially increased your braking distance. Slide right through an intersection.

Question - I have a 19" Pirelli Sotozero 3 245's all round winter tire/wheel setup for the M550ix as BMW provided those to Canadian customers because the 20" wheels and PS4's were not ready at delivery (for about 1000 bucks)...Does anyone know if I can still use those on the M5 with steelies?

(Maryland Resident here) Anyone who drives on summers, below 40degrees should be found negligent, should an incident arise. Clearly going against the manufacturers specifications and warnings. |

What other tires, did you not change? Be specific here... all seasons... or ultra-high performance summers?

If the 550 is current generation, then the bolt pattern is the same as current m5. The problem is the offsets.

i concur about the statement regarding driving summer high performance tires in the winter. if its sub 40 degrees and even a little wet out it then its just plain dangerous. you will definitely lose traction. for a vehicle with this kind of power its just plain negligent to not put on winter tires, it simply must be done.
