Agree on the M3 growing up... hence 1 series (now 2 series).. however. it's enthusiasts that pit the M3 against the 911.. not BMW .

The E30 M3 matched up with the 944. but after that... the M3 is a coupe/sedan vs the 911 which is a a 2+2 or 2 seat only sports car

I'd say all this information is to be expected and not exciting one bit. Same engine is boring, automatic also boring, theres also a zero percent chance this next M3 looks better than the F80 M3. I'd say expect a smaller 5 series from what we've seen. I'm sure they'll manage to make the engine sound a little bit better but not completely.

Underwhelming news for sure.

Is there a production version of s58 which needs to be reworked?
I assume u meant s55. And I agree, better sound is the only missing component in f80, however it is still not that bad, still m sound IMO only ill M....
Yes the S58 is going into the all new X3M and X4M. It is assumed that the next M3 and M4 will get a reworked version of this engine. Just like what happened with the original S63 engine when it first debuted in the E70 X5M, where the F10 M5 got a reworked version of that engine.

didn't they say the entire lineup will be electric by 2030 or something

Now.. BMW is making an entire model named the Competition model.

Consider the following.

Porsche Cayman
Porsche Cayman S
Porsche Cayman GTS
Porsche Cayman GT4

that is a 4 car model hierarchy on the Cayman platform.

BMW is now doing the same with all the M car lines.. for the next generation M3 for example.. it will be

M3
M3 Competition (NOT a ZCP package)
M3 CS
M3 CSL

The first line to have this expanded lineup of models (on sale at the same time) is the M5.

An M5 has been announced...

http://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1414257

and within 6 months.. an M5 Competition model has also already been announced

http://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1494065

Thanks, I had no idea!

They are totally different cars IMHO in totally different classes and price points. The 911 has been a long time next step-up for M3 drivers.

Autocar's Insights into G80

Came across this article from Autocar about G80. How accurate is it? Who knows. There's a lot to digest, but good stuff. Slowpokes rejoice! MT and RWD might live on after all.

There's going to be an X3M and X4M? Seriously, who the hell is the market for this absurd crap? A niche 200 people? This is taking diluted to a new level.

A slightly smaller version of the new M5 could end up looking great. I'm actually curious to see how similar the new M3 will be to the old M5 in terms of size though.

DCT is just another version of automatic... each version of which loses out to the next one that is faster..
Everyone really clobs up the M-DCT w/ with other DCTs because it's all DCTs but M-DCT is really unique compared to what you find in a PDK or Audi DSG. It's behavior is the only one of it's kind that I know of that replicates a MT in some ways. You even park it like one, there isn't one like it and it would be lame to lose it.

Obviously with German car companies they tend to apply any tech that is the best so I'm not surprised they would end up choosing a ZF AT like the F90 M5.

I prefer to have the M-DCT because it's quirky. That's why I love it. In the current world's obsession of pushing forward so much, you lose a bit of soul in certain things. Electric cars are probably the best example of this.

NA V8's are obsolete.

Turbo inline 6's are better in every sense.
They're a compromise for CAFE.

The S65 was probably as good as it gets in an M3.
