Unlike other Autocar preview articles, this one seems to be largely spared from botched facts and outright lies. A couple things are worth commenting on:
- There is no evidence of an M4 GC yet. That does not mean it won't come, but for now this claim should be treated as complete speculation. - I'm sure its just a typo, but the current M inline six is the S58, not the S52. Autocar is notorious for getting facts wrong or lying on purpose to increase hits. Although the rest of the article looks correct (aside from writing "S52" when the author obviously means "S58"), I would treat this claim with skepticism. An M4 GC might make sense, but another possible strategy is to allow the i4 BEV to stand alone as the halo GC model. Also, no evidence of an M4 GC exists yet, whereas the i4 and 4 GC have been testing for well over a year. |

interesting if it happens. I wouldn't mind it and would consider it depending on looks of course.

M4GC will be so close to an M5 ! I expect the G8X M cars to be bigger anyways ..

It would be equivalent to an RS5 Coupe and Sportback... both very successful variants... nothing inherently wrong... the only issue is that there is always a weight penalty, the RS5 Sportback and any Sportback variant is always heavier than the coupe / sedan... but then again we already have Convertible M4s so...

Why not? Audi has the RS5 Sportback and they even sell here in the U.S. Only thing is that an AWD M4 Gran Coupe would surely weigh almost as much as an F90 M5. And BMW has been pretty much as bad as Audi in not offering lightweight cars anymore. So whatever.

Yep. You are missing the fact that: 430i GC ~= 330i M440i GC ~= M340i And yet all those models still exist. So then, an M4 GC and M3 could also coexist. However, as I mentioned in my first post, this should be treated as wild rumor until we hear of evidence from known-to-be-reliable inside sources or see mules. With the dual motor ~520hp i4 coming as a flagship for the G26 lineup, it's not clear that an M4 GC would be in BMW's best interests. |

I know this is being discussed at BMW but hard to see adding a third model which would give BMW 3 models which would be essentially the same (M3, M4, M4 Gran Coupe). A decently equipped M4 can reach close to $100k CAD, I would hate to see how much of a premium a M4 Gran Coupe would add to that.
I know Audi has the RS5 Sportback and that would be a reason why BMW would even consider a M4 Gran Coupe, but Audi doesn't have a RS4 which the Sportback is supposed to cover. |
