Let’s talk about another big elephant in the room - black side skirts

So I went to see the new M3 for the first time... I really liked it overall, the grill is fine in person, the build quality is pretty good and the interior is a huge step up from the old car. However, I cannot believe how bad the black side skirts and a black shadow lines on front/rear bumpers look. Who in the world at BMW thought it was a good idea?! 🤦*♂️ As I understand, all cars come standard with this disaster and it cannot be removed... I cannot emphasize enough how terrible it looks in person ... I mean look at it from the side, it’s a sore to the eye!!! its like some redneck decided to add a rust guard paint to his old car... what were they thinking??? Also in photos it doesn’t stand out as bad as in person as I haven’t noticed it before.

Now the only thing I wonder is if it can be fixed with an individual color? Any thoughts on this?

yeah I don't like it at all the best I could do was remove the extended shadow line trim so the mirror caps and rear spoiler its just going to swirl horribly I have been mentally praparring for it or you could spend some money and have it all covered in a clear bra right away

I agree, this bothers me the most. It looks so akward, like some cheap aftermarket parts.

This belongs on a Civic Type R (and actually already exists there when I take a look at the current model), but definitely not on a BMW. Really disappointing.

Totally agree, makes the overall stance look much worse than it actually is.
My first mod would be colour matching this.
Take a look at the black cars & you get the point immediately.

In an interview they mentioned that the intention was to create a "racecar" look, similar you see on few other cars from Porsche..

Personally they don't bother me that much, but still once I receive my car, will take some pictures and photoshop it to body color to see how it looks and then may decide to let them have painted..

Don't think that default individual will change much here, or it will get very expensive as it's gonna be a special individual manufaktur work

I ordered individual paint color. I don't think it does anything for taking those off.

I get the existence, it's a pretty aggressive look, but practicality is going to be horrible. They're going to look like crap on 90+% of the cars within months, much more so than the lower touch shadowline components on other cars. I already cringle when my 8 y/o climbs out of the back of my white 2 door coupe, they are going to need to be wrapped and coated immediately for anyone that cares.

I does look less terrible with on dark exterior colors, but still akward and kinda cheap IMHO. They tried too hard and it reminds me so much of a Civic Type R.

Not a fan.
The skirts make the car look like it's sitting higher, not lower.

to me its just a fluid connection between the front end and rear diffuser. I don't mind it at all. Looks great to me.

Maybe I will notice it more when I see one in the flesh but in photos it doesn't bother me at all. Not exactly sure I would classify this somewhat small detail as an elephant in the room but I'll just throw this in the bin with the idrive knob location thread (I only recently started getting full nights sleeps after the horror of finding out the G8x knob is located a few inches away from where the F80 knob was placed) with the pick, pick, pick at every little detail and try to convince others it's a catastrophe of epic proportions thing some posters seem to gravitate to.

I posted this in a separate thread but it’s especially relevant here. I personally like the front of the car especially with the carbon package. What I really dislike though is the black lower pieces... here’s what it looks like painted (along with painted sidemarkers):

I read in another thread they did that because the car is tall and having that section be black makes it look shorter. How much truth there is to that I don't know.

I think the problem is it should be Matt finish like Porsche instead of gloss black.
