Video and Pics of Dual Resonator Removal - 2021 G80 M3

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
My apologies up front for doing lame teasers in multiple threads that were not my own across this board.

I have removed multiple resonators for several S63 Tu cars Ive owned and many Benzes, Audis, and even a Bentley with good results. My most recent resonator pull was on my M8 GC Comp and I gained a decent amount of decibels without much, if any, tonal change.

I picked up this G80 not too long ago and felt it was too quiet in stock format even with the valves open so I took it over to my local muffler guy who Ive used for years and pulled both resonators off. From another member here, I learned that there were two larger suitcases and pulling just the primary would not yield enough gains for me. YMMV.

So I pulled both (post cats) and there is definitely a decibel or loudness gain. I say under light throttle the gain is circa 20% and under WOT maybe 35% or so. Based on my live ear, the exhaust tones remained the same where there is a bass(y) tone at cold start and then a more higher pitched tone up top.

Mind you this process cost me 300 dollars all in and is reversible in nature. The video does have some higher rpm (7k) rasp but in reality I dont hear it via regular and spirited driving but you will hear it in the video from a stand still because I pushed the revs all the way up vs just leaving it maxed at 5 to 6k. For me the increase in growl and roar is there but for those who hate burbles, its not too bad. There are heightened bangs on rapid upshifts too.

Here are some pics and the vid:

stock set up

Post removal

Ugly secondary cats (Ill pull this next)

Cell Phone Videos (apologies for the bumper mount resolution)

Thanks for this man! It is hard to tell the actual sound from a video. I am sure it sounds nice in person.

Any noticeable drone at highway speeds?

Oh good question that I didnt list an answer to.... no drone to me albeit a very subjective measure.

Sounds great.

The member with frozen deep grey M4 says he is doing secondary catless with the resonator removal. Will be done this month.

I'm waiting to see results.

Hoping to order in July.

based on how the secondaries look- Im going to wait for a company to develop some like EVR which I used on my M8. Im not sure I would have my shop do a straight pipe on the cats.

Garage List
I think it sounds really good and might be something I would do.

I'm inclined to wait to see what Akrapovic and Eisenmann will have to offer but there is definitely going to be a massive delta in price for those options compared to just going with a res delete.

I want to like this, and I think I do. In just worried about how that higher end raspiness actually sounds. Was hoping it would be deeper.

I may even feel the B58 sounds better than the S58 still.

I need to hear some driving video with the engine under full load to accurately asses the true sound. But sounds much better overall.

As LBbluem2 suggested, you should try an x or h pipe to merge the pulses. BMW has historically done this in the resonator on their twin turbo engines. Unmerged it can sound farty/raspy/tinny; an x or h will not decrease volume but likely improve the exhaust tone.

I was going to say the same thing. Full load sound clips would be very helpful. Sounds good so far though.

Merges the pulses and essentially increases the "frequency" effectively improving pitch
