Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

There have been a few of us complaining of a clunk/thud from the front. Dealer had my car a couple years ago, couldn’t find anything. Always had my suspicions of the steering rack.

Like some have mentioned in that thread; only noticeable in warmer weather. I’ve had this noise for 16k miles now.

CaptBoaty check the link out. Looks like what we’re experiencing has been recognized by BMW. Not so much the creaking sounds, but definitely the clunk.

I’m glad you tagged me in this! Going to peek under the cars and see which rack we have.

Check the * note towards the bottom of the first page. The G80 has the rack in question.

Wonder if they would take care of this under warranty if you come in with lowered suspension and complaining of a creaking sound

I asked my service dept this (got to know them well) and they advised the same. Put back to stock if possible otherwise it's very easy for them to say the additional stresses of performance springs etc has made the situation worse / occur so it's not under warranty.

Luckily I hadn't put my springs on yet. But again they said bring it in first so they can report this issue on a standard suspension set up.

Is BMW continuing to produce cars with the affected steering rack or did they stop immediately upon learning of an issue. My car was produced 3 weeks ago so not sure if it may have the affected parts

My SA told me the same thing. And Im very close with him. I was a little bummed about that. I mean, it did it stock too. But it is what it is. At least I won't hear that noise anymore.

To be honest the wait period at my local dealer is so long I just ordered the left and right tie rods (come as inner and outer combined) and getting them fitted by the guy doing the springs.

I get the knocks from both sides unfortunately!

I think we are all talking about two different sounds in this thread;

-There's the metal creaking that most of us get when the car is stationary and turning the wheel. Usually worse after lowering. Related to the F8x where a very thin spacer would be installed between the hub and rotor to alleviate.

-Then there's the clunk/knock that a few of us have as well. I've torn my car apart attempting to troubleshoot this for over a year now. I have always had my suspicions its the rack, because BMW is notorious for faulty racks.

The bulletin somewhat speaks to both of these, so I'm curious what will change with the tie rod swap. And is it a faulty tie rod, or faulty install from the supplier.

I'm Team Creaking.

Creaking to the left or right. Stationary or moving. Mostly heard when parking.

How soon after delivery does the creaking seem to start?
